5 Strategies to Bridge the Leadership Gap


As a leader, you’re often focused on developing a vision and driving your team forward to meet targets and achieve results.

Have you felt as though you’ve hit a wall? Time and time again you have come up short and haven’t been able to achieve the goals you planned for your organization.

But oftentimes, you have everything you need by traditional metrics of leadership to succeed. You have plenty of education, plenty of training, plenty of experience—but you just can’t seem to bridge that leadership gap to lead their team to success.

In today’s newsletter I’ll explore how emotional intelligence can bridge the leadership gap and give you five strategies you can use to bridge your own leadership gap.

What Is the Leadership Gap?

Many are familiar with the concept of the leadership gap, which is defined as the difference between the skills and abilities leaders and those they need to be effective in their roles.

While developing your skills and industry knowledge is important as a leader, there’s one particular overlooked skill that can bridge the leadership gap— emotional intelligence.

Leaders, developing your emotional intelligence isn’t only useful as a leader, it can very well be the key to finally bridging your own leadership gap.

?By cultivating empathy, compassion, kindness, humility, and vulnerability, you may find that you are able to connect with your team on a deeper level. And once you truly connect to your team, you’ll be able to motivate and inspire them to fulfil your greater vision.

After all, leaders do not simply tell others what to do. Leaders lead.


5 Strategies to Bridge the Leadership Gap

1. Cultivate Empathy

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. As a leader, cultivating empathy allows you to step into your team’s shoes and see the world from their perspective. This deep understanding fosters trust and loyalty.

To build empathy, practice active listening—really listen to your team’s concerns, feedback, and ideas without interrupting or judging.

2. Practice Compassion

Compassion goes beyond empathy; it’s about taking action to alleviate the struggles of others. In leadership, you must be aware of your team’s challenges and provide the support they need. With compassion, you show that you are not only able to talk the talk, but you’re also able to walk the walk.

Whether it’s offering flexible working arrangements during tough times or simply being there to listen, compassionate leadership creates a supportive and nurturing environment. It encourages your team to bring their whole selves to work, knowing they’ll be supported with understanding and care.

3. Lead with Kindness

Leading with kindness helps to create a positive workplace culture where people feel safe to express themselves, take risks, and innovate. Always treat your team with respect and consideration in every interaction— even when you’re under stress and pressure yourself.

You can also practice kindness by being approachable, offering praise when it’s deserved, and providing constructive feedback with tact. Remember, small acts of kindness can have a big impact on team morale and cohesion.

4. Embrace Humility

Humility is recognizing that you don’t have all the answers and that you can learn from others, regardless of their position or experience. Having humility as a leader creates a collaborative environment where everyone feels valued and invested in the team’s success.

To embrace humility as a leader, routinely show your team that you are open to feedback, willing to admit mistakes, and eager to learn from them. This not only shows your human side but also empowers others to contribute their ideas and solutions.

5. Show Vulnerability

Vulnerability might seem like a weakness, but in leadership, it’s a strength. Vulnerability encourages others to be honest about their own struggles and creates a culture of transparency and authenticity where growth and learning are prioritized over perfection.

Practice vulnerability by being open about your challenges and uncertainties. Show your team that it’s okay to be human and imperfect by giving them grace when things don’t go according to plan.

This has predominantly been the key set of skills I have coached over the last 10 years in particular. It's where the main game is played for sure.
