5 Steps to Make Your New Year Resolutions Bulletproof

5 Steps to Make Your New Year Resolutions Bulletproof

You are reading The Fit Executive Blueprint, the newsletter created by Andy Naylor, CEO of Naylor Body Design.

You’ve promised yourself that this year will be different.

You’ll finally lose the weight, regain your energy and stop feeling like you’re sprinting on the hamster wheel of work and life.

But without a plan, your resolutions are simply wishful thinking.

I’ve been there too.

So here are the five steps I’ve learned, not just from my coaching clients, but from my own battles with procrastination and excuses.

1. Stop making resolutions and set systems instead.

Ever heard the phrase, “You don’t rise to the level of your goals; you fall to the level of your systems”?

Shift your focus from outcomes (losing weight) to systems (tracking meals, walking 10,000 steps daily).

?? Action: Forget vague goals. Focus on small, repeatable actions that make success inevitable.

2. Make the first step hilariously easy.

You don’t need to overhaul your entire life overnight.

Start so small it feels ridiculous.

Put your alarm clock across the room.

No grand morning routines, no 5 a.m. cold plunges, just one simple action that will create a cascade of new habits.

?? Action: Identify one small step you can do today.

3. Treat time like your most valuable currency.

“I don’t have time” is the most common excuse I hear.

So block time in your calendar for exercise, meal prep, and stress management like it’s a meeting with your most important client... because it is.

?? Action: Schedule 30 minutes for your health habits tomorrow.

4. Learn to laugh at your own excuses.

Humour disarms self-sabotage.

One of my personal favourites is: “I’ll start on Monday.”

Spoiler alert: Monday is a lie.

Another classic? “I’m too tired.”

Well, the best way to have more energy is to move your body.

?? Action: Write down your most-used excuses. Then write a sarcastic comeback to each. When the excuse pops up, read the comeback and smile before taking action.

5. Remember who you’re doing this for.

When the alarm goes off at 6 a.m. and every fibre of your being screams “Hit snooze!”, think about this:

  • Your family deserves the best version of you.
  • Your team looks up to you as a role model.
  • Your health is the foundation of everything you’ve built and will build.

?? Action: Write down three reasons why getting healthy matters. Keep them where you can see them every day.

This year doesn’t have to end like the last.

You only need to take the first step... and keep going.

By improving your habits, systems, and mindset, you’ll not only hit your goals but surpass them.

And when December 31st rolls around, you’ll look back and think, This was the year I became unstoppable.
