Why are you here? Has been a well-ignored topic for people who learned to settle in mediocre. Why are you here? Have you discovered your WHY?
Simon Sinek TED Talk on the Power of Why explained it very well. And I have seen people who just go with the flow and come what may, even moving through their lives not knowing their why, their life purpose.
Lucky for those who have found their calling at the early stage of their lives. The best example of this generation is Dara Mae Tuazon, an elementary education major who was at 11 years of age knew that she had found her true calling and that is to start instilling to young street children how a classroom set-up feels like and making it possible for them experience it. Her remarkable efforts to transform a vacant lot into a makeshift classroom has left a big impact not just on her ‘street pupils’ but most importantly, to the world. Another famous example is Justin Bieber at age 2 knew he wanted to be a singer.
Let’s go local. The Filipino inventor of improved computer chips - Dado Banatao said that when he graduated from Mapua, he knew he wanted to design things, and there was no design jobs in the country so he searched and moved to America.
To start off, one must know what your purpose is and having read the Principle no. 2 of the Success Principles, here are my major takeaways on how to effectively draw that burning fire to ignite!
Step 1: Identify Your Values
It is important to do constant self-check. Ask yourself what values perfectly describes who you really are. This will greatly help you create your vision, a clearer path on how your ending should look like and what kind of people you want to attract and make an influence eventually.
One way to do this is to produce a list of Google-searched values, include words you have in your brain bank as well. Read each word aloud and reflect if it would have a ring to it. Through this, you will be able to recognize the top 3 values that associates to what you do, what you wanted to do more and to whom you wanted to do it. Having identified the values you uphold is one of the fundamental steps that will greatly help identify your life purpose and will ground you or keep you on track chiefly, on unexpected life events.
Step 2: Make a Record of Your Achievements
First, define what achievement is to you. Be genuine and specific. An achievement may be something you do every day and aim to finish well such as, ticking all your pencil-sketched, today goals or just simply, successfully overcoming procrastination over a household chore or finishing a long overdue accepted favor. These things matter so do your best to list them down. Through this, you will be able to recognize your realistic outcome and how you can expand it further. Be a visionary. At this stage, you may realize if you are dreaming big and if you want to make a real impact on yourself and to others in your circle, much more to the world, your dream must be truly big that will naturally motivate you to learn more and strive harder.
Step 3: Conclude Why You Are Here
Now that you have your specifics, the time should be ripe to conclude your life purpose statement . This makes everything official and something that should be taken on a serious level. Your life purpose statement shows your track field dimensions, where your race begins, where it should only be and where it ends. You as a human being has its own limitations that’s why you have to be specific. Being selfless and doing self-preservation at the same time. Your life purpose should include (may it be visibly said or not) being available for your own self likewise to be of better service to others. An example of a life purpose statement from a mother’s point-of-view. To raise well-grounded, God-loving children at the same time, inspiring other moms of my age group to take action and be active digitally to help create an environment that listens and full of positivity for future generations.
Step 4: Now Put Words into Action
Make a daily action plan and match it with your daily work schedule. Your action plan works like your Month’s or week’s goal by which you have to integrate with your daily activities. This is going back to the basic idea: E+R=O (Event + Response = Outcome). Take full responsibility for your life and your results. Every action step you do must be in line with your life purpose. And when you do it , it doesn’t seem like work at all.
Some are worried...if I follow my purpose, what about the money? Will it sustain my living. I too had that question for years and when I took my leap of faith, God was with me all the way. That’s why it’s called leap of FAITH not FEAR.
Step 5: Time to Evaluate and Re-Calibrate
Your life purpose statement will be your social identifier as well, so better be clear and do your best to live by each word. Ace-ing in your chosen platform on putting your life purpose statement into concretion will be the bottleneck of your journey. There will be critics for sure. Better if you can create a network that will help you get the right feedback and you yourself have to adjust likewise. Be open to conversation.
Find an accountability partner who will help you with your journey. I am fortunate to have my dear friend Stephan Jensen from Denmark as my accountability partner and we have been partners from 3 years. Weekly calls to check up on our whys, our action plans and how we can support each other. I am fortunate that I've found my #accountabilitypartnerforlife.
I'm also grateful for having my life coach, Margit Cruise who has been my coach for more than 10 years now, who has seen my ups and downs and help me believe in myself, that I can accomplish anything I set my mind on. And I am grateful for both Stephan and Margit for being there for me always!
In Conclusion
How many of us are still unsure what exactly to do in life? On how to make a life well-lived? I encourage everyone to never stop learning, every day, every single day. Know yourself, do value checking and passion testing. Release from within the power of focus and you will be able to have the right combinations you need to unlock the lock. Once you are settled on your life purpose statement, never fear draw you back from being a blessing to others. Continue to take action. Continue to live a life of purpose.
Many asked what #journeyto100000ph means. I have now my want year back but this year, my WHY was so much strengthened with Simon Sinek’s TED talk and Dado Banatao’s Story.
My life purpose is to inspire, to motivate and to help transform Filipino lives. For Filipinos to dream bigger and not settle for “puede na”. We are very good people - not just kind and hospitable. We are a nation of hard-working, innovative people who can do more that we think we can. We have been followers and on service all our lives and IT is TIME. It’s time for us to SHINE. TIME FOR US TO BE THE VERY BEST VERSION of ourselves. Let’s not dream small. Let’s now start to dream big. Tama na ang puede na.
Know your why, take action, reject failure, move ahead, take action, and at the end, I am sure if we do our part we will be a better country ( each of one of us taking more responsibility or our lives). Stop blaming others. Because all of us are in control of our own life. WE make the choices and let’s make the right one.
