5 Steps to Boost Retention
Mike Harbour
Through the implementation of our Quit Losing Talent Framework, we help organizations add millions to their bottom line by developing their leaders and fostering company cultures that WIN, KEEP, and INSPIRE employees
Just as I frequently talk about, there are endless factors that go into retaining employees due to the varying personalities of individuals in your organization.
?
But, there are certain things that are universally true that need to be implemented in every workplace to create a culture where people want to stay.
?
Let’s look at 5 ways you can start building your “Quit Losing Talent Culture”:
?
1. Recognize Talent and Effort Daily
This seems like an obvious “value your people” step for leaders, but I rarely see it practiced effectively. Broad appreciation, like a thank you email to your entire staff does not suffice. Your people need to see you go out of your way to thank them as individuals and acknowledge their efforts.
?
2. Systematically Launch and Equip New Hires
Organizations who have serious turnover issues often see it early in their employee’s tenure. This is because employees who begin a new role with no direction or connection to a mission lack satisfaction and confidence in their position. You need to have a system that ensures new hires are fully equipped and passionate about their new role.
?
3. Regularly Communicate a Clear Vision for the Future
If you want to keep employees engaged in their work, you have to connect them to a vision. When people show up to work to feel like they are sprinting on a hamster wheel every day, they quickly burn out and begin to look at other options. Take your people off the hamster wheel and put them on a highway with an attractive destination. Give them a reason to show up for you.
?
4. Train Talent To Leave Better Than When They Arrived
Look, you can do everything right as a leader and people are still going to leave. You should make it your mission to ensure that if anyone is to leave, they leave as both better professionals and people. If it’s clear that you care about the development of your employees, you’re going to retain a whole lot more.

5. Develop Leaders and Employees to Their Fullest Potential
A culture of growth is a culture that retains. An employee who isn’t attracted to an organization that prioritizes the development of their people probably isn’t an employee you want on your team anyway.
?
Look, leadership is never easy, but implementing certain systems and practicing certain habits will make it a lot easier.
?
My challenge for you would be to assess how well you and your organization apply these 5 steps.
?
Employee retention isn’t an action. It’s a result - and if you’re doing these 5 things well, I can ensure you are going to see a positive impact on the culture of your workplace.
