Do you remember when you were a little girl, growing up and you heard the message "Marry Rich"?
The idea behind this was to find a successful wealthy man that would take care of you for life.
This is not a very empowering message for little girls. Little girls that may one day grow up with their dreams and goals.
I imagine that subconsciously many women don't believe they could be that successful or rich, because they learned that "Women marry rich" they don't become rich themselves.
As entrepreneurs, we stand on the shoulders of giants who have paved the way before us. Let their wisdom inspire and guide us on our journey:
Sheila Johnson: A prominent entrepreneur, philanthropist, and trailblazer in the fields of hospitality, entertainment, and sports. Johnson co-founded BET (Black Entertainment Television). After the sale of BET to Viacom in 2000 for approximately $3 billion, Sheila Johnson's stake in the company contributed significantly to her wealth, propelling her into the billionaire ranks.
Rihanna: In addition to her successful music career, Rihanna has made waves in the business world with her cosmetics brand, Fenty Beauty. Launched in 2017, Fenty Beauty gained widespread acclaim for its inclusive range of makeup products and has since expanded into other ventures, including fashion Savage X. She became America's youngest self-made female billionaire in 2022.
Sheryl Sandberg: As the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Facebook, Sheryl Sandberg played a pivotal role in the company's growth and success. She is also the author of "Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead," a bestselling book that sparked a global conversation about gender equality in the workplace.
Issa Rae: Is a multifaceted talent known for her work as an actress, writer, producer, and director. Rae's impact extends beyond the screen; she is also a vocal advocate for diversity and representation in the entertainment industry. Through her production company, Hoorae Media, she aims to create opportunities for underrepresented voices in film and television.
So, ladies, as we celebrate Women's History Month and honor the fearless women who've shaped our world, let's commit to investing in ourselves, accessing all of our potential, and leaving a legacy that inspires generations to come.
