Who I Am…?
Before we go to much further, let me take a moment and introduce myself so you know who I am and why you should listen to me.
I am entrepreneur and former executive that has implemented what I coach to great success, building successful businesses by building high-performing teams.
I have written many articles on leadership espousing the results that high-expectation coupled with personal caring alongside profound awareness creates.
I specialize in helping fellow entrepreneurs and executives find their flow, connect with their teams and clientele to grow beyond their self-imposed limitations.
Discovering Flow as a New-Tough Leader
First, I will begin by sharing I discovered concept of ‘New-Tough’ Leader and the notion of ‘flow’.
Having left a corporate executive position, I knew I wanted to create a business that focused on what had always been my passion at every level: helping others discover and reach their full potential.
During a coaching discussion, a prior report and veteran of sales, mentioned that I coached her to great success. Curious, I asked what that was like from their perspective. In this moment, she was able to sum up what former peers, executive leaders and team members have described in spirit. She said that in her experience, she had never worked with anyone whose expectations matched their level of caring and added: you’re tough! She reiterated the ‘caring’ aspect as being different; and I replied, well doesn’t that make it ‘new-tough’ – and a brand was born.
In order to have a starting point to launch a coaching relationship, I looked to incorporate an assessment into my practice that could bring awareness, shared language, and initiate our action plan. A good friend introduced me to Talent / Wealth Dynamics. As I worked through becoming accredited as a Flow Consultant, I was struck not only by the information, but more importantly the direction thereby transforming data into intelligence. This paired perfectly with my philosophy of awareness that being New-Tough is built upon.
Now the shifts that lead to Flow, New-Tough, and Action to get to success:
Shift 1: Find your Flow
The first step with every client starts with the Talent Dynamics Profile for Leaders (Wealth Dynamics for Entrepreneurs) to discover which of the eight wealth profiles is your natural path. Your personalized report will give you clear direction on what path to follow in your job and business. Why make things hard work when you can follow your flow?
- Get clarity on what advice to take, what to leave, what opportunities to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to.
- Follow the right role models for your type. Oprah created wealth very differently than Warren Buffet.
- Understand your clients, your family and build world class teams that work in flow.
- Learn when your winning formula becomes a losing formula through the cycle of time.
During the debrief we will add the information in the report to the context of your current business to launch toward our coaching action plan.
Shift 2: Embrace the New-Tough mentality as the Dawn of the Future
The old method of describing ‘toughness’ as behavior that exerts command and control, hierarchical power, and carrot/stick techniques of reward/punishment designed to drive ‘results’ has outlived its usefulness by decades.
*New-Tough* is a shift toward the paradigm that people are a precious, limited resource. Being tough is getting to know them personally, being interested in their well-being both at work and away, to advocating for their growth toward their inherent genius. If organizations suggest that team members are ambassadors while ‘off-the-clock’, then they must also treat them as individuals while on-the-clock. The trite phrase, ‘this isn’t personal, it’s business’ must be retired permanently. In order to bring one’s whole self to work negates that there is a separation. This ought not be confused with professionalism or accountability.
The New-Tough Leader has a disciplined process for attracting top-talent, knowing them very well, coaching them to their potential, and creating a culture that fosters community thereby retaining the talent. There is always a need for great people. Turnover is an optional expense; creating a Community with your team and clientele yields mutual loyalty.
Shift 3: Become aware, reflect and demonstrate emotional intelligence
Being self-aware is the most important aspect of emotional intelligence. The shift is to take the information that you are receiving through non-verbal, verbal, and written cues from peripheral focus to full-focus and then transform information into intelligence. Namely, use the information to better understand your team, your clientele, and other leaders to reach out, meet them where they are, and develop a genuinely deep connection. Developing trust in this way will manifest open dialogue, better collaboration, innovative ideas, and productivity. Implicit in that recipe is low turnover, talent attraction, and real accountability.
Shift 4: Be Flexible
According to a June 2018 report, 96% of U.S. Professionals say they need flexibility, but only 47% have it. That represents a competitive advantage exist for entrepreneurs and executives to approach their businesses through the eyes of their team and clientele and uncover ways to introduce greater flexibility.
What form might that take for your business? How might you use the ‘flow’ of each team member to serve their needs and unlock greater creativity and productivity?
Once you understand ‘flow’, how could you adjust your offering to serve the needs of clientele better (i.e. hours, channels, etc)?
Shift 5: Invest in success with Professional Coaching
