A 5-Step Recovery Guide for Event Stress: Navigating Through High-Pressure Moments

Event planning is like riding the most exhilarating yet exhausting roller coaster imaginable. It's a career packed with deadlines that loom large, client expectations that stretch high, and those all-too-familiar last-minute changes that test even the most seasoned professional's resolve. Navigating through this maze of demands and unexpected challenges, it's no surprise that stress becomes a constant companion for event professionals, making the job as challenging as it is rewarding. The high baseline stress level event professionals experience and reach critical levels during events where large and small crises trigger additional stress.

Drawing from extensive research into workplace stress, I've developed a system tailored for those of us immersed in high-pressure careers, such as event planning, called the Stress-Proof System. One of my favorite ways to work with clients is to create specific "user guides" for the system. My latest, "The Stress-Proof Event Professional," is more than just an eBook; it's a lifeline, offering strategies to cope with stress and master recovery from it. For high-performing event professionals accustomed to excelling in demanding environments, understanding how to manage stress effectively is not just beneficial—it's essential.

Exploring the 5-Step Recovery Guide:

  • Manage Baseline Stress:?It's essential to understand that event professionals often start with a higher baseline stress level than many other professions. During live and virtual events, there are ample additional stress triggers. Strategies to manage baseline stress before entering events (and every day) include incorporating activities that lower cortisol levels, such as physical exercise or engaging in hobbies, into daily routines.?
  • Recognize the Signs:?Spotting the early signs of stress in ourselves and others is akin to having an early warning system. It empowers us to take action before stress escalates. Paying attention to changes in emotional reactions, sleep patterns, or even just a sense of being off-kilter physically can be the clues we need to address stress head-on.
  • Interrupt the Reaction:?When stress hits, having tools at the ready to counteract it is vital. This could mean stepping outside for fresh air, physically signaling your body to release cortisol, or simply changing the environment for a few moments. It's all about signaling our bodies and minds that we're in control.
  • Focus on the Fix:?Shifting the focus from problem-oriented thinking to solution-oriented thinking is key. It involves listening, validating the concerns of others, and collaboratively finding a path forward, which not only alleviates stress but also enhances teamwork and outcomes.
  • Practice Active Recovery:?Stress doesn't just evaporate; recovery is an active process. Finding effective ways to disconnect from stress and recover is vital. Whether you're more of an 'iguana' who finds relaxation in stillness or a 'border collie' needing to stay active, identifying and engaging in activities that suit your stress recovery personality is crucial. It's about giving ourselves permission to disconnect from the source of stress and recover in the way that suits us best.

I've been passionate about working with high-performers who thrive in demanding careers for over two decades. The drive, dedication, and resilience in these environments are genuinely inspiring. Yet, the baked-in nature of stress in such roles must be addressed.
