Anyone and everyone can become a leader if they wish to. However, becoming a leader is a journey of growth, transformation, and impact.
When you see leadership as influence, service, and excellence, these are more than just job descriptions or titles, this is a way of being and the values that you uphold.
Traditionally, the loudest, proudest, most assertive people are seen as born leaders. These are extrovert descriptors, hence introverts tend to feel like the underdog, backbencher, or in most cases carry around increasing imposter feelings and fear of being found out as “not a born leader”.
Since leadership is about skills, style, strengths, systems, and structures, it can be learned, improved, and made more effective and impactful through intentional growth.
I truly believe that you can plan your leadership journey and have milestones that help you know that you are releasing, realising, and growing your potential to make an impact in the world.
Here are 5 Stages of Introvert Leadership Growth
Stage 1- Self-Discovery & Purpose (Position & Why).
When you know yourself you can grow yourself accordingly. Many get into leadership positions because of technical competence, then realise people are not processes and need more than techniques to get results. Knowing yourself and your strengths and weakness especially as it relates to your core introvert traits, helps you to develop the strategy to embody the leadership style that works best for you and your business or organisation. Understanding why you want to lead, and how to achieve purpose whilst being authentic is vital.
Stage 2: Building Trust & Connection (Permission & Relational Leadership)
Many introverts consider themselves to be highly sensitive people (HSP) which means they they also exhibit high levels of empathy. Empathy can sometimes be seen as a weakness that prevents leaders from exerting their authority however, it is a core component of building trust and gaining permission from followers or staff to lead them.
Introverted leaders can use their natural empathy and desire for deeper connections to create lasting bonds. They can also develop their listening and communication skills to a level that seeks to understand and acknowledge others.
Stage 3: Consistent Action & Long-Term Thinking (Production & Infinite Game)
Following on from trust, many seek to be led well by leaders who are reliable and foster sustainable growth. They look to a leader to execute a vision by producing results that maintain a focus on sustainable success over the long term.
Many introverts have a gentle and quiet presence that can be used to create effective collaborative spaces and facilitate genuine and consistent actions and decisions. By not overly seeking to be the center of attention you can choose to be the anchor for courageous decisions and strong influence that helps your people produce results. You do this by developing your leadership presence.
Stage 4: Empowering & Collaborative Leadership (People Development & Collaboration)
Introverts, who often prefer a thoughtful, measured approach, can lead with this mindset by fostering a culture of continuous improvement and long-term success. Introverts tend to favour 1-2-1 connections and interactions over group conversations. This makes them natural mentors, offering thoughtful guidance and support. To grow as an introverted leader empower others by recognising and nurturing their strengths. Using your one-on-one mentoring style allows you to have a personalised approach to developing those around them.
You can also encourage individual contributions and collaboration in a way that works with the strengths and preferences of those you lead.
Stage 5: Confident Influence & Authenticity (Pinnacle & Integrity)
Introverts can gain respect as leaders when they lead with quiet confidence and influence others through unwavering commitment to their values.
Quiet confidence is a feeling of assuredness in one's self, skills, and knowledge without needing external validation. It's a state of being modest about one's talents and quieting the ego, yet delivering results.
Introverts thrive when they embrace their authentic selves. Leadership isn’t about mimicking extroverted traits but about leveraging your strengths.
Channeling quiet confidence, a desire to let everyone shine and grow, and having a collaborative approach whilst focused on 1-2-1 connections and support helps introverts develop other leaders.
The pinnacle of leadership is the ability to create and nurture other leaders around you.
Conclusion
In conclusion, remember that your unique strengths, perspective, and skills bring a much-needed different leadership style.
By focusing on growing your leadership capability and capacity, you can move from just being quiet, and capable to being confident and impactful.
