Anywhere and anytime you want!? For the first time ever, I'm offering this program in a fully on-demand fashion, and if you're willing test it and share some feedback with me, you can access it for $99!
In preparation for writing my book, Closing The Confidence Gap, I asked over 500 women what they'd do if they had a little more confidence. Since book launch, I've asked thousands of people (all genders!) this question. I often hear responses like:
...and so many more. What I've learned about confidence from these conversations, from years of client conversations and my own experiences is that feeling more clarity and confidence is LESS about taking perfect action and MORE about removing what's standing in the way of the clear and confident leader already inside you.
Remember, you are a leader in any place you influence others. To that end, I wanted share my top five tips to boost your confidence in the moments that matter.
Tip 1: Stop criticizing.
Have you noticed that you can't criticize yourself into a more confident version of you? I know it's tempting when we feel the hard feelings like doubt, anxiety, uncertainty, or imposter feelings, to criticize ourselves and say things like: What’s wrong with me??If only I……..Get your stuff together!
But, I have yet to meet anyone who has been able to criticize themselves into more confidence. (I've sure tried!). Next time you feel doubt, notice it with a ton of self-compassion and normalize the heck out of it!
?? Try this instead: Notice the feeling with compassion without fighting it.
Tip 2: Say no.
Saying no can build just as much confidence as saying yes! As we rise throughout the ranks, we are continually presented with opportunities to do more. I get it! There are opportunities and income that come with saying yes. It can be easy to go along with the demands and the opinions to keep the peace and other people happy. But whose peace and happiness are you keeping? And does that extra money, new title, or new responsibilities even feel good or is brewing up future resentment? My clients report back the same feelings - saying no feels intentional, empowering and energizing. They take their power back.
?? Try this instead: How can I say no to what is draining my energy and most out of alignment with my values right now?
Tip 3: Stop underestimating yourself (and overestimating everyone else's skills, talents and intelligence!)
For so many years I sat around meeting tables making up stories about how much smarter all the leaders were than me. Because of this, I withheld ideas, felt heightened self-doubt, and stayed more silent than I want to be. How often have you put other people on a pedestal, believing that because they’ve been in the role longer, have more years of working experience, or even because they exude an air of confidence, they know better than you?
With myself and my clients, I lovingly call this pedestal syndrome. I know it’s tempting to put leaders on a pedestal because we believe they know all the answers and that we should hold back our ideas or priorities (or even data!) because we think they know better than we do. It’s time to stop overestimating everyone else’s intelligence and underestimating your own.
?? Try this instead: Ask: How can I own and share the unique perspective, skills and talents that only I can bring to any situation?
Tip 4: Trust Yourself.
When you're trying to make a decision, it's no wonder why we second-guess ourselves so much. The world is noisy with so much available advice on social media, in books, and leadership articles. And now, ChatGPT! There is no shortage of opinions on how you should lead and the actions you should take, so trusting yourself is more important than ever today.
?How often have you quieted your still, small voice because you were too distracted or looked outside of yourself for the right answer? Data is very important in making decisions, but if we only rely solely on data points, we can spend too much time second-guessing ourselves. We can make mis-aligned decisions.
?? Try this instead: Use your head AND heart AND gut to make decisions. It is your competitive advantage as a leader. (I teach this powerful technique in my leadership course now available on-demand!)
Tip 5: Notice your “but firsts."
There are two words we frequently use that are costly to our peace, our potential and our paycheck. So many of my clients say, “Kelli, I would love to do this thing, BUT FIRST…
?? I need to make sure that I’m qualified (they are)
?? I need more experience (they don’t)
?? I should do more research (they’ve done it)
?? I need to be sure I won’t fail (none of us can prevent this!)
?But first, but first but first ….I encourage my clients to swap these two words for another two: WHILE ALSO. It’s not that great leaders feel confident all of the time, it’s that they’ve learned how to advance while also feeling doubt. It might sound like “I can do this thing while also feeling nervous.” All too often we are tempted to wait until we feel confident to take action, but that’s backward. The actions of confidence come first, the feelings of confidence come second.
?? Try this instead: Take your smallest, bravest next step on a thing WHILE ALSO feeling doubt. Confidence is the side effect of taking action.
