5 Simple Steps to Start a Gratitude Journal

5 Simple Steps to Start a Gratitude Journal

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it’s that time of year when we’re encouraged to show appreciation for all that we have.

Practicing gratitude is a great way to reduce anxiety and depression, increase self-esteem, and strengthen relationships.

As uplifting as this exercise might sound, it can sometimes be challenging to acknowledge and appreciate our favourite people and things that make life great – especially when you’re facing mental health concerns, such as stress, depression, anxiety, or trauma.

Pause, reflect, and appreciate the small moments. Turn the ordinary into the extraordinary!

By following these 5 simple steps, you’ll be well on your way to feeling more appreciative of both the little and big things in your life!

1. Create a note on your phone or laptop

Or if you prefer a traditional pen and notebook, so that you can easily read and add to it whenever you need inspiration.

2. Start to list any person, pet, event, experience, or opportunity that you can think of

Even if you remember something positive from years ago, jot it down! This will help you get in the routine of recognizing the best parts of your life.

3. Whenever you experience a moment of appreciation

Add it to your journal. Once you have a few entries, you can organize it any way you like: by date, theme, or even by the way it made you feel, e.g. happy, confident, fortunate, etc.

Take a moment to jot down what you are grateful for - it's a powerful practice that nurtures a positive mindset!

4. Take some time every day

As little as five minutes at the same time, to think about something you appreciate to add to your journal.

After a while, it’ll become a part of your routine, helping you to appreciate the little things in life naturally. Include even the most seemingly small occurrences, like receiving a nice text from a friend, getting a cuddle from your dog or cat, or enjoying the refreshing fall weather.

5. Whenever you are feeling low, discouraged, or lonely

Look back at your gratitude journal entries to be reminded of a time you felt particularly happy, appreciative, or inspired.

With your new gratitude journal handy, you’ll remember just how much you have to be grateful for; not only around Thanksgiving but all year long!
