With the holidays coming up and the year nearing the close, things can get a bit stressful.
This is why it is incredibly important to have daily practices in place to help with our mental health.
Feel free to pick and choose your favorite practices to incorporate into your daily routine:
1.) Engage in Exercise
Exercise has been known to relieve stress and releases dopamine in our bodies which can help improve our moods. Exercise has also been linked to getting a better night’s rest. This means that your body is able to sleep better and get the full recovery it requires so you can wake up and feel better.
Some great exercises to try are running, yoga, hiking, lifting weights, or cycling.
2.) Write Down 3 Things You Are Grateful for Every Morning
This practice helps re-center us to what is important in our lives and is a practice of gratitude.
These things you are grateful for do not have to be major things to be grateful for such as access to food and clean water. While yes, these are great things to be able to reflect on and know we are privileged to be able to have access to basic human necessities, try to think of things that are unique and specific to you.
For example, you could write down that you are grateful for sweet potatoes (because they are quite good), how running makes you feel, or the sensation of sun hitting your face in the summer.
By focusing on smaller pieces of life to acknowledge and be thankful for, you start to become more aware of the small pleasures in life and show and give more gratitude.
3.) Meditate
Meditation is a great practice to slow your mind. In a world where we are constantly bombarded with entertainment, “click here now’s,” and obligations, it can seem quite difficult to sit and be still.
Try using guided meditations on YouTube or Spotify/ Apple Music. Guided meditations give you something to slightly focus on to help guide the practice of feeling your tensions and stresses in your body.
4.) Set Aside Time Weekly for Yourself
With so many demands in our lives, it can be easy to get stuck and lose the relationship you have with yourself. Try to set aside a couple hours out of your week to get to know yourself better.
This can be taking a walk by yourself in the park, going on a solo lunch date, or relaxing in your bathtub for an evening.
5.) Practice Breathing
This might seem incredibly easy. We do this everyday without even thinking. This is where this practice is different. It is intentional.
Practice breathing deep into your diaphragm through your nose. Make sure you are taking the time to feel the breath enter your body and flow down. Then, slowly release and follow the breath out of your body through your mouth.
By practicing this in situations when we are not stressed or anxious we can build this skill to use in moments of greater stress or anxiety.
