5 Signs Your Organization is Being Held Back by Ego

Leadership that fosters co-creation, safety and inclusivity hinges on a healthy balance of confidence and humility. Ensuring your ego supports rather than hinders how your team functions and grows is key.?

Great leadership is not as simple as ‘checking your ego at the door’. We all have an ego. Learning to identify how your ego impacts your leadership - for better or worse - is key to being an effective and impactful Leader.?

Recent?research?of over 2000 leaders suggest that self-confidence is key to effective leadership. Where does self-confidence end and an inflated ego begin - and how can we tell?

Overt signs of an unhealthy ego can include:

  • Fear of being viewed as weak
  • Unwillingness to say ‘I don’t know’?
  • Unwillingness to ask for help
  • Tendency to judge quickly and harshly
  • Lack of openness to criticism
  • Unwillingness to shift from the status quo
  • Wanting to win, not understand
  • Overestimating your own capacities

Signs of a healthy ego, in contrast, include:

  • Willingness to surround yourself with people who are smarter than you
  • Recognize your own shortcomings, flaws and limitations
  • You are comfortable with who you are
  • Willing to question yourself and your thinking
  • Curiosity and a growth mindset
  • You seek out, listen to and act on feedback without becoming defensive
  • You have a healthy sense of humour and are able to laugh at yourself

It’s not always obvious. In addition, most people will self-report as being confident, and not ego-driven. So what are the tell-tale signs that your organisation or team’s success is being inhibited by ego-driven leadership?
