5 Signs that Your HR Manager is a Bad Boss
1. The Boss is Always Right
The most annoying attitude from your boss is when they always think they are never wrong. The boss is always right and the employees are always wrong, or usually called as a narcissistic personality.
This attitude can mean that they don’t want to go out of their comfort zone and don’t want to be looked down upon by his/her employees.
Whereas, learning to admit the fault is critical issues in the managing hierarchy of an organization. So, how do you can cope with this kind of arrogance?
It’s better for you don’t argue or criticize him/her in direct confrontation. If you do because of personally feeling wronged, it only left you a destructive result.
So, you need to be effective than to be right.
You can take his/her words when it’s reasonable, not out of context. If you want to fight him/her back, ensure that you have better strategies or ideas to show your capabilities. They tend to support people who worth to be respected because of their greatness.
For example, dealing with employment law is one of the critical HR’s jobs. However, when your HR manager seems overconfident to think he/she knows everything and doesn’t want to consult the matter with a lawyer or attorney, you should be careful if one day he/she ends up leaving the company in trouble.
2. Can’t Do What They Should Do
The HR manager has responsibility for maintaining human resources organization, from planning, implementing, and evaluating the policies, programs, and practices of human resources and employee relations.
They also have the duties of updating all kinds of job requirements and job positions, recruitments, and many more related to human resources.
Recruitment is one of those important matters of HR manager when he/she has to find only qualified candidates for the company. So, it means he/she should be able to know whose kind of candidates is qualified for the further interview process.
However, if your HR manager can’t even review a resume or differentiate between which kind of qualities from candidates must have and good to have, it means there is something wrong with his/her way of dealing with the duties.
He/she only ends up send unqualified candidates that wasting your time to interview.
The problem isn’t only on choosing the unqualified candidates, but also unable to fire the employees who only bring loss to the company.
For example, the HR manager maybe can’t fire a pregnant female employee due to pity. But, if she is doing insubordination for the company, her pregnancy can’t be the reason to not fire her.
The HR manager should be professional who can differentiate what should do what shouldn’t do in all his/her decisions.
3. Always Agree with Other Opinion
The other worse attitude rather than narcissistic personality always agrees with other opinions never have their own ideas.
When the HR manager always said yes to the boss while saying no to the employee, you should be careful with this kind of attitude.
The company consists of business people with different kinds of jobs. However, business people especially what the company owner says or does isn’t always the sole right. Sometimes, the boss also can be wrong regarding employee relations or human resources.
So, it’s the job of HR on human management, explaining the consequences of a policy or action, and giving solutions to a related problem.
When you know that the decision is wrong but the HR manager is only following, you should be wary.
4. Can’t Relate to Your Business
HR’s knowledge and skill aren’t only related to recruitment, performance appraisals, planning, or other human resources matters.
However, HR also need to understand your (5W+1H) business, so they can help to find, promote, and retain the best employees for the company.
Usually, HR manager always attends meetings related to HR, so he/she can learn more about what the business truly needed.
The situation that you should aware of is when he/she is being asked about the business, but only gives a blank stare or answer haltingly. Or when his/her decisions about HR even doesn’t relate to the business.
For example, when the HR manager is working for a manufacturing company but he/she is never showed up on the floor site. How can he/she addresses the decision related to employees when don’t understand how business doing?
5. Don’t Take Action until Crisis
Of course, there are some problems that can’t be prevented, but some others can be minimalized even prevented when you can detect the potential early. It also can be applied to HR’s jobs to prevent any problem related to employees.
You can detect that your HR manager is bad when he/she is doing this kind of action. For example, your HR manager keeps rejecting or ignoring to accept a request for a raise for the employees until the employees do boycott or demonstration.
It’s a kind of failure when the HR manager doesn’t act as quickly as possible, especially when the problem can be fixed in the first place.
So, when the HR manager only can fix the problem when the crisis has accumulated, then you should consider his/her position.
When you see these signs on your HR manager, you should take proper action immediately. Moreover, when you see he/she do the same mistakes over and over.
If you want to make your business and employee relations doing great, then the role of a good HR manager is crucial.
