5 Signs You are Working in a Toxic Environment

As a leader, being proactive in addressing the signs of toxicity within your workplace is key to avoiding creating and sustaining an unhealthy company culture. Toxic environments can lead to poorer quality output, reduced productivity, and employee dissatisfaction—ultimately resulting in personnel turnover. Identify any potential issues early on so that you are able to proactively combat them before they become deeply seeded and detrimental.

Mistakes are Not an Option

It's simple to identify a dog-eat-dog culture, as it is characterized by an abundance of blame-shifting. Such cutthroat environments foster immense competition and can be detrimental to productivity and morale. Making a mistake in such an atmosphere can cause serious repercussions. As a result, employees will go to extraordinary lengths – like withholding important information from their colleagues or falsely blaming coworkers for blunders – just to evade accountability and outshine the competition. Making mistakes is no longer a viable option for learning.

This work atmosphere can be particularly hard for those from minority backgrounds, having to cope with the implicit demands of excellence and perfection. Blunders by non-minorities are allowed as learning opportunities; unfortunately, in contrast, it often feels like a judgment of our status and roles whenever we make mistakes.

No Support for Employee Growth

In toxic workplaces, where mentorship and support are scarce, many individuals have to take matters into their own hands. In this digital age, it has become especially intricate to maintain a connection between supervisors and employees due to the ease of detachment. This heavily impacts entry-level employees, who feel abandoned and unmotivated in such an environment. Additionally, it further disadvantages those from marginalized communities; these individuals often lack the support needed to convert potential into tangible growth opportunities.

Frequent Gaslighting

Gaslighting is when others make you question your own reality. For example, When a manager assigns you a task with specific objectives and then unjustifiably revises them without regard for the initial parameters, it can be both demoralizing and erode your trust in their trustworthiness. Such actions leave employees feeling devalued and lacking confidence in themselves.

Gaslighting can be a destructive force in the workplace, especially when it comes to promoting equity and inclusion. For instance, if someone of color voices concerns about a colleague's racist language they may be told that their co-worker didn't really mean what was said or even worse - that they must have misheard altogether!

Manifestations of Occupational Anxiety

When you're in a poisonous work atmosphere, psychological distress can start to take its toll on your body. You may sense that your mind and physique are tensely prepared for anything which is accurate because the brain never stops surveying for potential hazards, in which case it senses that something perilous is looming near. Prolonged fight or flight mode can take a toll on your physical health, leading to outcomes such as digestive issues, sleeping difficulties, exhaustion, aches, and even panic attacks - common symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression.

Disengaged Staff and Retention Struggles

When an organization is toxic, employees begin to disengage and switch off mentally. This inevitably leads to a high turnover rate as people flee the workplace they once knew. It's a telltale sign of toxicity when you either experience difficulty keeping staff or notice that certain departments within the company are losing personnel in droves over any given 12-month period.

In conclusion, it is evident that toxicity in the workplace can have a detrimental effect on employees from all backgrounds. Organizations should take steps to foster an atmosphere of equity, support, and growth in order to retain and cultivate talent from all walks of life. Only then can we create truly thriving work cultures for everyone.

WomenTech Network Thanks for sharing. Very pointed and helpful article. Toxicity tends to breed further toxicity and it takes resilience, courage and potentially the risk of career suicide to challenge it. Listening leaders and listening organisations can create non-toxic workplace environments that are inclusive and psychologically safe. This is not utopia. This is not a pipe dream. It is possible to create a healthy, sustainable and inclusive organisational climate if the will and appetite are aligned.
