The traditional path to career progression was linear. Depending on the job or professional, entry into a specific industry could be through an internship, apprenticeship, a matric certificate, diploma, or degree. From there, experience and additional skills or qualifications determined salary increased and promotions. Management and leadership positions were the end goal for ambitious individuals.
Today, this traditional model has been turned upside down. Professional development has never been more important. Businesses are focusing on upskilling employees, but people are increasingly invested in their own skills as well, and it’s far from an incremental linear growth in knowledge and expertise that they are looking for. Instead, there is an appetite for changing careers, moving between sectors and industries and broadening horizons – particularly for talented individuals. How did we get here, and what does it mean?
In 2018, Dell Technologies published a study with the Institute of the Future called, Realizing 2030: A Divided Vision of the Future. The study made the bold statement that 85% of the jobs that will exist in 2030 did not yet exist in 2018. At the time it was both a revolutionary and divisive statement. For some, the need to reskill, upskill and digitise was paramount. For others, the claim was too extreme.
In the following five years, a global pandemic shifted digital transformation into hyper gear. First remote and then hybrid working became commonplace, supported by cloud-based technologies and ways of working. There is no doubt many roles have changed and adapted as a result.
As a recruitment agency , we have seen a shift in how employees view work. Now, more than ever before, employees are willing to not only change jobs, but move into new careers as well. There is an understanding that change is the only constant. The world is always evolving, and new skills will be required to navigate it, whether you stay in your old job or not.
This realisation has prompted individuals to leave their careers and try something new when previously they would have just stayed put. For employers, this means the talent pool is increasing in new and interesting ways and savvy employers are finding talent that would not previously have been considered.
Similarly, talented individuals who are up for a challenge are looking for interesting new roles, industries, and careers to lend their experience and talent to. The key is to identify that you’re ready for a career shift.
Do you find yourself caught in a routine at your current job, facing the prospect of a new week with dread, and struggling to find positivity in your work? If this resonates with you, it could be a clear signal that it’s time for a change. While the thought of job searching and interviews may seem daunting, dedicating a significant portion of your life to work warrants finding a role that genuinely brings you joy. Here are some indicators that it might be the right moment to explore new opportunities and uncover a more fulfilling professional path.
1. Your routine has become monotonous
If you feel a bit stuck in a job where your daily tasks have become a comfortable routine rather than a source of inspiration, it’s time to reassess. When work loses its spark and becomes monotonous, it’s crucial to step back and evaluate your professional goals.
Instead of remaining in a role that provides comfort but lacks fulfillment, consider exploring job opportunities that genuinely capture your interest and excitement. This exploration isn’t just about finding any job; it’s about discovering a role that aligns with your core values, interests, and aspirations. Identifying what truly excites you empowers you to make informed decisions about your career path.
2. Your well-being is being (negatively) impacted
If your current job is negatively affecting your overall well-being, manifesting as burnout symptoms such as lack of concentration, heightened anxiety, irregular sleep patterns, or unexplained physical discomfort, it’s time to take a step back. In such cases, prioritising your well-being over your current job situation is imperative.
Persistent stress and burnout can have profound effects on both mental and physical health. Moving on from a job that takes a toll on your health can lead to visible improvements in your physical and mental well-being. It’s not just about changing jobs; it’s about reclaiming your health and finding a work setting that promotes a healthier work-life balance.

3. Stagnation without progress dominates your work life
Feeling stuck in your professional journey, with limited opportunities for career advancement, can be disheartening. If the path to progress appears blocked, it’s a crucial sign that it might be time to explore new avenues.
Take a proactive approach by assessing your strengths and weaknesses. Identifying your skills and areas for improvement will empower you with self-awareness and guide your decision-making process. If your assessment reveals untapped potential and a readiness for progression, it indicates that seeking opportunities elsewhere could be the key to unlocking your professional growth.
4. You frequently experience high employee turnover with colleagues leaving
A workplace where colleagues frequently discuss leaving or express dissatisfaction can be a red flag. While it may not necessitate an immediate departure, it does warrant a closer examination and thoughtful consideration of your current situation.
Engage in meaningful conversations with current and former colleagues to gain diverse perspectives on workplace dynamics. This proactive approach allows you to understand ongoing challenges and potential reasons behind discontent. It’s an opportunity to assess whether the issues raised align with your own experiences and values, helping you decide if the company is the right fit for your professional growth.
5. Your workload is overwhelming
Challenges in the workplace contribute positively to professional growth, but when those challenges become overwhelming, it’s a problem. If you consistently find yourself burdened with tasks beyond your capacity, despite discussions with management, it’s a signal that your current work situation is not sustainable.
Consider exploring new opportunities where your skills are acknowledged and valued appropriately. A workplace that respects your expertise and provides necessary support can make a significant difference in your ability to thrive professionally.
