Every Friday is BYOB (Be Your Own Boss Fridays). I recognize that being an entrepreneur, a solopreneur, business owner, or freelancer is also a part of The Future of Work and there are plenty of readers who fall into that category (myself included!) and many who want to be in that category. So each Friday will be devoted to that audience but the things I share should also be applicable to those with more traditional employment options as well.
Self-sabotage is how we hurt ourselves, whether consciously or unconsciously, and keep ourselves from achieving our plans, goals, and dreams. Both of us have sabotaged ourselves in the past in different ways, as I’m sure most everyone reading this has. But as entrepreneurs it is important that we identify these behaviors and figure out how to avoid them so that we can be productive, thriving business owners.
Today we are talking about five common self-sabotaging behaviors as well as some advice from Dr. Alice Boyes, author of The Healthy Mind Toolkit, on how to overcome those behaviors.

Now more than ever, people are moving from full-time employment to entrepreneurship. We are collectively realizing that the only job security that exists is the one that you create for yourself, but how? My wife Blake and I are successful entrepreneurs who both made the transition while we had full-time jobs. You can learn how here.
We also share some personal stories of how we have gotten in our own way and how we have become more aware of the way we treat ourselves.
In this episode of the podcast we explore:
- How to overcome negative self-talk
- What to do when you feel out of control and start to lash out at others
- How to take a step back and refocus if your default way of thinking is negative
- What to do if you tend to procrastinate
- What you can do if you struggle with perfectionism
