As the new year begins, it’s a natural time to reflect on the patterns and challenges that have held you back in the past. When faced with a recurring struggle, it’s easy to feel stuck and overwhelmed. Perhaps you’re in the midst of adversity that didn’t end just because we entered a new calendar year. Wherever you find yourself, you can undoubtedly create new breakthroughs this year.?
Here’s the thing: Maybe you can’t control 90% (or more) of what’s happening to you, but you can control your response. This is why it’s critical to do the mental conditioning to build a peaceful resilient mindset, and that is something you can start at any time.?
If you’re looking to break out of the same old struggles and bring more resilience and mental peace into 2025, try these tips.
- Make a decision to overpower your old thought habits. Remember, you choose your mindset, your mindset doesn’t choose you. When a negative thought emerges, tell yourself something like, “I’m doing this a different way.” Then repeat your new thought, belief, or perspective.
- Be proactive by checking in with yourself more often. Try doing a quick and simple body scan meditation once a day to connect with yourself. See what you’re feeling and where you’re feeling it. If you can see where you're at internally/physically/emotionally, it won't surprise you later. This will help you be more mindful as you go about your day. We often ignore all the internal signs because we put everything else first, such as technological distractions and prioritizing the needs of others. The problem isn’t that your body isn’t talking to you; it’s that you’re not listening.?
- Have some self-compassion. Beating yourself up and focusing on everything that isn't "good enough" causes unnecessary suffering and holds you back. It's been scientifically proven that people who are more mentally resilient also have more self-compassion. This trait allows people to move on faster because they aren't dwelling on mistakes, weaknesses, etc. Try putting your hands over your heart once a day and telling yourself that you love yourself.?
- Stop focusing on the negative. It’s human nature to focus on the negative more than the positive, but we also know that what you think about is what you attract. So, if you focus on the problem, it’ll likely just become bigger and bigger taking up more mental space, draining your energy, and hijacking your emotional state. Furthermore, when you let go of trying to find a solution, you often find the answer you’ve been looking for.
- Give yourself the space to ask for and receive help. Relying on yourself alone can feel like you’re making progress because your internal wheels are spinning, but you’re probably just stuck in the mud. Ask for help. You’ll likely get to the solution and find relief much quicker.?
