Overwhelm is a sign you’re pushing more weight than you've ever have done.
It’s the strain of the extra weight on the bar, the extra mile you’ve never run before, the new experiences you’re now using to expand your bandwidth.
When we set ourselves a bigger goal or a new outcome, we have to appreciate that what got us here will not get us there, lifting lighter weights will not grow us larger muscles.
And when we start to test our capability by adding that extra load - our stance, our structure, our capacity will be tested.
Yet we have to try it, we’ll have to shift our feet, straighten the back and find our strongest angles.
This is the same in business as it is in the gym.
As I gain more opportunities and work in different spaces my ability to manage a busier diary is tested.
As you get more responsibilities in a job role, you will have to learn new skills to make those new tasks part of your operating rhythm.
As you initially take them on board this will be you mentally shifting your feet, checking your stance and testing your mental bandwidth.

We are growing, we have said yes to pushing our comfort zones and this, in part is why it’s a good thing – you said yes to pushing your limits. That is the first step to growing our capacity.
As we expand, we have to remember that now is the time to let go of things that potential we don’t find interesting or that are eating into the time we spend doing things that need our attention, interest or excite us.
We cannot be all things to all people and in order to develop and grow we need to understand what we automate or delegate.

The not knowing if you’re doing it right or good enough, the anxiety of growth as you step across new boundaries.
If we succumb to the fear, pull back from the border lands of our comfort zones and pull back into what we know we’re capable of, we will not make the shift in thinking or take the action that would enable us to move into something new, a change of job, a promotion, an entrepreneurial (ad)venture
It is the resistance to change that you’ve said yes to that causes the frustration, agitation and the stagnation.
It is the letting go of what you’ve known and embracing where you’re going that enables the change.

This will mean updating your thinking right now to enable fresh action
This will mean dismantling what you thought you knew to access a new train of thought
This will mean getting a new skill set in order to get creative with what you have
As human beings we are completely able to make the shift required to move us forward, when the over whelm comes in I remind myself of one thing –
“I wouldn’t have said yes if I wasn’t capable”

It is the reminder you asked for the extra challenge and overwhelm is the reminder that embracing a new life to grow bigger muscles, a reminder you’ve just never done it before. It is the test and the obstacle to be overcome – the overwhelm is your brain playing tricks on you to back down from the step up.
Whether it is getting the dream job or even walking away from the wrong job. The overwhelm you're feeling could well be the fear of letting go and growing forward.
You wouldn't be scared if it was inside your comfort zone, I remind myself regularly where my life does begin.
At the edge of my comfort zone and overwhelm is the reminder I'm in that space.
