Everything you always wanted to know about Aspheres. Season 2/ Part 1
The 5 reasons you won't get a perfect asphere.
Aspheres in the diameter range from 10 to 100 mm are often made on hydrostatic bearings using an HD mandrel (see image). The lens is thermally blocked on top of the mandrel and centered using mechanical gauges on the bottom and rim of the cylinder. In order to protect the polished surfaces of the semi-finished products during the process, they are coated with a painting.
In this way, this 'lens on mandrel' can be subjected to the necessary work processes such as milling, grinding and polishing in different machines without the lens being subject to major reclamping errors.
The shown lens in our tests is without black painting but glued with thermal glue on the hydrostatic HD-Mandrel.
