Getting a job is much like a job itself. It is time consuming…. and it can be exhausting to continually try to “sell yourself” in a world where the application process is set up primarily in a black hole.

To get out of your job search funk, get out of the online application rat race and get a dialogue started with some key contacts. Do some networking man, and start a conversation!

We like LinkedIn for job searching because it is a throwback to when you got your first job because your Dad knew some guy that had a buddy that worked at a company and he got you in the door for an interview. LinkedIn is like that. But on a global scale and on steroids.

Some of the most common reasons you are still unemployed

1. You don’t know how to network. You are on LinkedIn; you set up a cool profile with that picture you took on vacation with your family. STOP! Get a headshot on that profile that is you, and you alone. In business clothes. From the waist up. Not your college graduation picture. Start using it. Reach out, make connections, send a note to an old friend who works at a company where YOU want to work. Make connections and shake the trees.

2. Your Resume is Terrible. Yes, you are a super writer, a super communicator and a super employee. You are not a resume writer. Get some professional help. We know you are a great communicator, are dynamic and “results-driven” and all of that good stuff. It is more than that. Recruiters and hiring managers want to see accomplishments, not job descriptions. Your resume should show what you are worth and why you are worth it! Call us, we will be happy to help

3. You Look Terrible. That cool pierced ear (guys) you got in college, lose it. And for goodness sake, shave! No, I am not talking about well groomed beards, you don’t have to get rid of those, I am talking about the stubble and the whiskers coming out of your ears (and other places). When you get the interview, pay some close attention to your appearance. Go ahead, buy that new white shirt. Gals, bring that skirt hem down and button that shirt up. Go easy on the cologne and make up…and jewelry…and colors. If you are looking for a job in corporate America, look the part!

4. Your Value is out of Whack. Know what you are worth. Don’t look for jobs too far outside of the spectrum of your existing or previous salaries. Ready to move up? Look for opportunities at 10 to 20% in increase of what you are making. Too far below, you are over qualified, too far above, you are out of touch. There are plenty of online resources that can help determine salary ranges of jobs by geography, years of experience, etc. Know your value and be willing to walk away from opportunities that don’t pay you what you are worth. We often deal with clients who are not getting the interviews they want, and when they share their job targets or send over jobs they have applied to, I can quickly see that they are “going above their pay grade” in a big way. You can’t win interviews for jobs at the Director level when your current title is “Associate”. Be reasonable but ambitious, and be able to communicate effectively what you are ‘worth’ to an employer.

5. You are Mad. Or Sad. Or Moody. Be grateful for interviews. Be grateful and optimistic when talking with recruiters or hiring managers. Losing a job sucks. Get over it! This is not a date, I am not interested in your cool dude vibe, I am looking for a new member of the team. I want someone who can work with the team, be a contributor, collaborate with others and be willing to listen to other opinions. Positive, outgoing and optimistic candidates get more interviews. It is true. Google it.

 Additional tips….

Make sure you follow the directions in the job posting. If they ask for a cover letter, include it. If they ask for salary expectations, cough it up.

Follow-Up. Once you get the interview, go and do your best! When you get the interview, that job is yours to lose. Be prepared. Do your research and for goodness sake, send a thank you note to the interviewer.

Don’t talk yourself out of a job. When you get the interview, keep your answers to a few sentences are less. Be able to speak intelligently about a handful of career accomplishments. Not something that happened in 1987. Refer to something great you did last month or last year.

According to the author - these are some of the most common reasons you are still unemployed 1. You don’t know how to network. 2. Your Resume is Terrible. 3. You Look Terrible. 4. Your Value is out of Whack. 5. You are Mad. Or Sad. Or Moody. And to think I thought it was because I was a geologist - then again maybe that is excuse number 5 !

Well, that's hitting them right between the eyes - Love it! As an amalgamation of the 5, they don't listen nor heed advice of those trying to help. Down here we have a saying, ya can't push a string. Well done Robynn Storey, PHR - enjoy the Holidays!
