5 Reasons You Will LOVE Working in Australia!
There are so many reasons I LOVE being back in Australia. While I spent over 6 fabulous years in New York, coming back home has been amazing in so many ways (and the fact that I am now looking out my window at sea of stunning purple of the jacaranda tree certainly doesn’t hurt!).
So, if you are a foreign qualified lawyer looking to work overseas or an Australian lawyer looking to come home, here are just a few reasons/ reminders of why you will love living and working in Australia.
I love the weather in Australia! There is a saying that it is beautiful one day, perfect the next and its true (mostly). The benefits of a great climate are everywhere, you just have to look at the mood and overall well-being and sense of optimism that permeates Australian daily life. Australians (and those working here) typically love the outdoors and exercise and wellbeing are a very big part of daily life. It wouldn’t be unusual for an Australian lawyer to go running at lunch time or even have swim before work. Whilst Australia has 4 distinct seasons, summers are warm, but our winters are incredibly mild, and more akin to a northern hemisphere “spring” than snowy, sub-zero temperatures many are used to.
2. Australia values “Work/ Life Balance”
Australian working life has been described as less intense than London or New York.?There will be times that you work hard (and let’s face it, if you wanted a job that was 9 to 5, you wouldn’t have become a lawyer) but the deal flow is less intensity than other global hubs leaving you more time to enjoy all Australia has to offer. Here in Australia, it is common for lawyers to start earlier and finish earlier than in other cities with lawyers often starting work at 8:30am in Sydney/ Melbourne (and even earlier in QLD).??Most law firms respect the fact that you have a life outside of work and are far more “outcome driven” over “facetime for the sake of facetime.” Making time for fitness, friends and family are considered important and expected in Australia.
3. The beaches and the great outdoors
This list wouldn’t mean anything if we didn’t include the beaches, be it Bondi or St Kilda, Manly or Cottesloe, Australia has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. In fact, over 10,000 of them.?Life in Australia often involves the sea, and we are a better nation for it. But we have other wonders too.?With world class skiing resorts, beautiful mountains, incredible deserts, waterfalls, the Daintree rainforest and Great Barrier Reef, Uluru…we have everything and more (oh and did I mention the award-winning wine!)

4. Egalitarian Culture
Australia prides itself on its egalitarian culture. Anyone, regardless of their socio-economic background can make it here with hard work and determination regardless of the school you attended or if your parents belonging to a country club or not.?This has created a very diverse workforce and best evidenced by the fact that our current Prime Minister was raised in social housing by a single mum!
5. Extremely Safe Place to live and raise a family
Whilst we all know Australia is known for the spiders and the wildlife that can kill you. You would have to be incredibly unlucky or incredibly reckless to be in any real danger. I have never seen a snake or a dangerous spider outside the zoo. Australia is consistently ranked as one of the safest countries in the world, with low crime rates and a trusted police force. It also has excellent public schools, day care centres and exceptional public health care system that is the envy of the world.
So, if you are looking for a place that offers not only quality and interesting work, but an amazing lifestyle you would be hard pressed to find a better place than Australia. If you want to discuss options or hear about the process of moving across, please feel free to InMail or email [email protected] to schedule a time to speak.
(Foreign lawyers with banking & finance, corporate, projects, energy, TMT and competition experience are highly sought after. You will need a minimum of 4 years’ experience (including training contract) at a highly ranked or global firm.)
