5 Reasons why you should not accept a counteroffer

Did you ever receive a counteroffer? ??

You have been working at a company for years and for various reasons have decided it is time to move on. After going through the entire application process at a new company, you get a great offer to join them. You decide to inform your current employer and suddenly, they are willing to accommodate requests that were not feasible before. They make you a counteroffer… What do you do??

We understand that it can be a tricky situation when you are presented with a counteroffer, as it may look very tempting. However, below we list 5 reasons why accepting a counteroffer may not be the best idea.?

1. It is not a long-term solution

Counteroffers are often a short-term solution to underlying issues that have been going on for a while. Oftentimes, the situation that led you to leave your company in the first place will not change.

2. It creates trust issues

Receiving a counteroffer makes you feel good at first, but it is also a sign towards your current company that you may leave soon, once you get a better offer elsewhere. You already almost did so, right? This can lead to similar problems as you encountered before, such as hindering your future success in the job.

3. It damages your relationships at work

Your current company feels betrayed given the fact you were thinking about leaving and will not appreciate you that much anymore. Also, your colleagues may resent your decision. This could lead to a hostile work environment, making it difficult for you to perform at your best.

4. It affects your long-term goals

It is likely you end up in the same place as you were before you accepted the counteroffer, without the opportunity to progress. Statistics show that people still decide to leave their company six to twelve months after a counteroffer, because job satisfaction does not live up to their expectations.

5. It damages your reputation

Accepting a counteroffer after having received an offer from a new employer goes around in the market and creates distrust for should you decide (again) to leave your current company.??

At Digital Green, we understand that it can be a difficult decision. Changing jobs is always an exciting step. It is important to discuss your concerns about a counteroffer with your recruiter so that he/she can help you look at all options thoroughly and help prepare you for a possible counteroffer.
