My experience and background are probably not that different from many of you with respect to changing fields.?Our society is so very different from just 50-years ago.?Very few people stay with one company or with one type of vocation.?Some of this is for survival and some of this is because of wanting to experience something completely new.
I would admit that after graduating from college with a degree in mathematics, I never would have believed I would be doing what I’m doing now.??Along the way, I taught in public and private schools, worked in the corporate world for a huge company (AT&T), and then worked in sales in real estate.??For the last 17-years, I have been in the world of Feng Shui, and have loved every minute of it!
After over 40-years working, I have a unique perspective on what made me happy, motivated, and challenged.?But at the same time, I can tell you what was a source of unhappiness, de-motivating, and boring in these different work experiences.?Maybe some of these thoughts may register with you.
1)???It always felt like I was like a hamster running around that wheel.?Few things changed and many days seemed pointless.?Hand-in that report, attend another meeting, etc.?I never thought I made much of a difference.?If you spend a decade or two putting in your time and thinking like this, you may be ready for something that is different each-and-every day.
2)??Every job has some folks you’d rather not spend time with.?As much as I enjoyed most of my 15-years teaching children, there were moments when being in that same room all day long drove me crazy.?There were some days, I swear those walls were closing in!?To add to this feeling, I had no choice of who entered that classroom not wanting to be there or disliking me quite a bit because I had the audacity of expecting them to participate.?This got old folks!
3)??Whether in a classroom, a cubicle, or an office, I missed having time outside greatly.?Being inside always and not enjoying the natural world got to be a real problem for me.??This lack of freedom and having to always be at work at a certain time was getting worse every year.?There is a reason folks call it the “rat race”.

4)??I always have enjoyed being creative and in our society that is not always rewarded and sometimes even discouraged.?Do that task the same way.?Don’t deviate from the routine.??Sometimes, showing extra initiative was not appreciated.
5)??My real estate career was started because of many of the things above.?I could set-up my own schedule.?I could be creative.?How successful I was had to do with my effort.?I loved that.??But after a while, upset homeowners and the thousands of Realtors you had to compete with every year with became more stressful.?I liked several things about real estate, and I must admit it really was more enjoyable than being in a classroom of 30 kids of which 5 despised me (Lol), or in an office setting where I was bored.?But still, after 30 years, I wanted something even better!
My career as a listing agent in real estate introduced me to something called Feng Shui.??I immediately found the concept compelling and could not stop thinking about its implications for my real estate career.
I started studying this “philosophy” and wanting to know more. At this time, I was a broker/owner of a 30+ agent real estate company in North Carolina.??I started using these techniques with my homeowners, and they absolutely loved it!?They loved it because it worked but also because they felt their home felt better.
I was now actively looking for training opportunities. I needed to learn more!??Luckily, I found a certification class only 2 ? hours away and signed up!??It was the best decision I ever made career wise.
That was 17-years ago, and I was able to finally find a way of checking off all of the things I wanted in how I spent my personal life and my working career.
I’m still self-employed (yeah!).??I can now work with only people I want to (double yeah!).?I have the opportunity to get outside as much as possible but can also make a living online if I wish.?I now can be as creative as I want and do only things I enjoy.??I get a lot of positive reinforcement from helping people.??And finally, I’m never bored! ?I absolutely still love looking at houses, and now can be helpful to businesses of all types.?
I’m one lucky guy!!
