If a few years back, someone would have told you to move your SAP HANA from on-premises to the public cloud, you'd have probably asked them to take a vacation. But that's just water under the bridge now. Public cloud has established itself as a leading platform to run mission critical applications such as SAP HANA amongst large enterprise businesses worldwide. Today it isn't a matter of if you are taking your SAP HANA application to the public cloud, it's when-- and more importantly, how are you going to achieve that!
Cloud has made it possible for users to access data, applications, and services over the Internet. The cloud eliminates the need for costly hardware, such as hard drives and servers. Recent trends indicate that over 90% of businesses are already using cloud technology in a public, private or hybrid cloud environment. There are 5 key advantages that deployment of SAP HANA in public cloud has over the traditional on-premises deployment which makes the former scenario more compelling:
Flexibility & Scalability
Almost all major public cloud vendors have made it extremely easy for enterprises to run their SAP HANA applications in their cloud platforms. Microsoft Azure has recently announced support for upto 20TB of memory for running high performance applications such as SAP HANA. Google Cloud Platform has also announced support for upto 4TB of memory for SAP HANA. Also within public cloud, it is very easy to scale up or down the infrastructure very quickly, making it an ideal platform to run high performance and memory intensive apps such as SAP HANA.
Deploy Faster
SAP HANA in the cloud can let you build and deploy consumer and business applications in no time. Almost all of the major public cloud vendors offer SAP Cloud Platform as a PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service) model that help users get SAP HANA application up and running very fast. This fully managed cloud service makes it possible for developers to leverage the power of SAP HANA, without spending time on operational and administrative tasks.
Improve ROI, decrease costs
SAP HANA in the cloud does not require up-front capital investment in software or hardware for partners and customers, resulting in a more cost-effective service with minimal risk. Once it is applied, the cloud provider will manage platform operations to minimize the cost of deploying and developing cloud applications.
Access to real-time customer analytics and data
Public clouds, especially GCP, provide an incredible platform to run analytics and reporting on SAP HANA data and allows users to get rich insights about their business. Users can move infrequently accessed HANA OLAP data from in-memory to a data warehouse like Google BigQuery to provide more cost efficiency.
Security and regulatory compliance
Almost all major public cloud vendors are committed to data protection and privacy, and have very comprehensive compliance coverage as well. For organizations in heavily regulated industries, this commitment makes the move to the cloud possible.
As you look ahead at future innovation like IoT, machine learning and artificial intelligence, public cloud could open the door to all new business scenarios using SAP HANA. Again, it isn’t a matter of if you’re taking SAP HANA to the cloud, it’s when – and public cloud platforms provide the best approach to get there. 6 年Great article! Saran, what about the flexibility of customization which On-Prem deployment option provides, many customers chose the S/4 Hana Private Cloud due to limitations with Public Cloud deployment.
