5 reasons landing your dream promotion has left you feeling broken

You finally landed that promotion to senior management that you've always thrived for. This was it. The big one! The chance to show everyone what you can do and make a real impact.

So why are you feeling more broken than ever?? ??

You had convinced yourself that all of the effort to get you here was worth it. The long hours. The extra tasks. Saying 'yes' to everything and getting the results, no matter how much extra time and effort you needed to put in. But surely getting that senior management role would mean you'd get more time and head space to work on the bigger things, and really make changes. Right?

However, you're finding yourself:

  • working more hours than ever
  • in back-to-back meetings all week, with no time to take any action
  • being told by your boss that you need to "step up", even though you feel you've got nothing more to give
  • missing out on home and social occasions in order to "get this one last thing done that can't be missed"
  • neglecting exercise and self-care, eating poorly and using caffeine/ alcohol as a means to get through the day

And all of this leads to feeling of self-doubt about your ability to do the job, and guilt that you're not delivering for those in your team and your friends and family. ??

So why is this happening?

Here are 5 things I bet you're doing that sound like a good thing to do, but are actually the source of your problems:

1?? Taking on more tasks ??

2?? You're checking in with your boss frequently ??♂?

3?? You're trying to do everything yourself ??♀?

4?? You're being overly cautious and avoiding risks ??

5?? You're attending every possible meeting ??

The truth is, although these things feel like they should get you praise and recognition, they are in fact likely to be making you come across as:

  1. Not ready for the transition from managing to leading
  2. Lacking confidence in your own abilities
  3. Not trusting of your team and their ability to deliver
  4. Unable to prioritise

So what can you do about it?

In order to make a difference, you need to do something different. It's time to embrace new skills and ways of working that will transform you into the high-performing leader you were meant to be.

Attending meetings feels like the right thing to do... So one is seen and heard, until you learn to delegate them to your trusted team (that you are building).

So easy to think we need to "do more tasks" as we climb the corporate ladder, rather than really focus on what adds value ??
