Founded in 2022, the ASNT Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT). Its mission is to advance the field of nondestructive testing through research, scholarship, and workforce development. The 2nd Annual Golf Tournament is the perfect chance to introduce your colleagues and friends to the important work that the ASNT Foundation is doing to support the future of the NDT industry.??

The golf tournament is an opportunity for fellowship and networking, all while learning more about the ASNT Foundation’s initiatives and the important projects that the funds raised in the tournament will make possible—projects that will help the NDT industry become more well-known and supported.?

2. Bolster the next generation of NDT?

Funds raised by the ASNT Foundation go directly to support the NDT industry. The Foundation provides scholarships for individuals pursuing education and training in NDT in technical training, community college, and university degree programs. Students engaged in NDT research can also apply for the Student Travel Grant, which provides financial support for travel expenses related to attending ASNT events. The Faculty Grant encourages faculty members at US universities and colleges to revise or develop courses focused on teaching NDT/E by providing financial assistance, which in turn helps benefit students studying NDT.?

In addition to providing financial assistance to individuals, the ASNT Foundation supports workforce development programs to help people learn about and prepare to enter the NDT field. These programs target secondary school students, college students, transitioning military members, and veterans. The Foundation pursues grants and other funds from government sources and other organizations for workforce development. Programs include NDT apprenticeships, the ASNT Mentoring Program, and resources available on the ASNT online career center.?

“The ASNT Foundation Golf Tournament is our biggest fundraising event of the year,” said Marybeth Miceli, a trustee of the ASNT Foundation. “In order to build the future of NDT, we need to fund it.”?

3. Support important research?

In addition to providing funds directly to individuals or institutions, the ASNT Foundation helps fund important research for the NDT industry. The Foundation offers fellowships to graduate-level students conducting high-quality research in science and technology at accredited institutions. It also sponsors its own research projects in various aspects of NDT methods, technologies, best practices, and business strategies. The findings are published in ASNT’s journals and conferences, benefiting members and stakeholders.?

One recent project undertaken by the Foundation is the "Industry Compensation Report," a?workforce development research initiative. In the spring of 2024, the ASNT Foundation, along with research consultancy McKinley Advisors, began comprehensive research to understand the state of readiness of the nondestructive testing (NDT) workforce, identifying skills gaps, measuring industry wage and benefits, and hiring obstacles and challenges within the NDT workforce. The goal was to collect actionable data to develop strategies to bridge these gaps and ensure the sustainable growth of the NDT workforce. Additionally, the Foundation will create a compensation and benefits report using the gathered market data. This report could become the primary reference for NDT professionals, employers, hiring managers, and human resources professionals. The report will be available in November 2024.?

“People totally have a blast on the golf course, because you're there with all of your colleagues and you are talking about NDT, but having a great time too,” said Marybeth.?

Recalling last year’s tournament, John said, “I got to be on our team with the Greater Houston Section, which had people who I've kind of grown up with as well as some newer leadership within the section. It was just a lot of fun to represent the local section. It was an honor; a lot of them are my dear friends.”??

“I gave up golfing many years ago, but it's really important to go and support the event through sponsorships, or through supporting a foursome for customers or colleagues,” said Marybeth.?
