The 5 Reasons Content Creation is Hard...

I'll admit it. The day I got called a "content creator" was the day of cringe.

Second to that was when someone asked me if I was "an influencer". My expert brain + ego launched into defense mode and balked at the thought that this teenager wanted to know if I was worth "knowing" based on my follower headcount.

Forget the 15 years in corporate, 2 degrees and countless hours of continuing education and certifications. None of that mattered.

What's more, deep down I knew my content wasn't that great and embarrassingly so considering the other truth. I was and am a speaker, educator and spent a career developing content for other people.

No one was more baffled than me the day I went to hit "enter" and there were crickets. This would go on for another year. That was until I realized these 5 things that was holding back my content and sucking the life out of me.

  1. Content creation was "hard" because everyone told me it would be.

Gotta' love how the human brain connects to anything that sounds accurate. Every person I interacted with made content creation out to be this big deal and this long drawn out process. I bought into the narrative and would spend hours crafting something people would glance over in under 3 seconds. No wonder we are frustrated when no one likes, clicks or reposts.

2. You don't know enough.

I know. This one stings, especially for the expert who has been the go to person their entire career. But this was the Achilles to creating great content. Relying too much on what you know means not keeping up with what is trending. I knew what I wanted to talk about, but quickly would run out of high quality content because I didn't know enough. I stopped learning which meant my mill of information dried up quickly with daily posts.

3. You have the right message but it's being shared with the wrong audience.

Step 1 in branding, know who you audience is. When I finally got to the place where my messaging felt great, there was a misalignment between who I was talking to and what I was saying. After making a minor pivot and recognizing that my original audience changed as my brand evolved, it was a mind blown moment. As you create content, ask yourself, am I talking to the right people? If not, find some new people who need to hear from you.

4. You have the wrong message but the right audience.

This one never happened to me, but based on the work I do with female founders it's more common than I thought. They are absolutely connected to the right audience, but are sending the wrong message. A few reasons this happens is because they are sharing things they aren't passionate about or they are sharing what "everyone else" is sharing so there is little differentiation.

5. You haven't taken a firm stand.

As I preach to the choir (and myself) this was the hardest of all. The thought that I might offend or trigger someone with my position on something. Or worse, be trolled by commentary from people I will never meet. Getting over this fear was the final step to leaving the sucky content stage. Once I realized that, people will be people and everyone was and is entitled to their opinions and responsible for their reactions and emotions content creation was a breeze.

This is isn't an exhaustive list but these are the eye opening moments that changed the game for me.
