Did you know that our country has the largest adolescent and youth population? That's a massive pool of potential brain power! However, millions of these bright young minds never reach their full potential. We surveyed 50 schools across Maharashtra and found that 25% of students drop out of school every year. Here are 5 major reasons for high school dropout rates in India:
1) Education is unaffordable
When it comes to a child’s education, there is a lot that goes into it, including fees, books, and uniforms. The harsh reality for many marginalized children is that their parents simply cannot afford to provide for their educational resources. So, even if the child wants to learn, they don’t have the choice to, and that is another great potential lost to poverty.
2) No access to learning essentials
Forget smart classrooms; some schools lack basic learning materials like slates and textbooks. The funding schools receive barely covers maintenance costs and salaries. This makes it impossible for schools to be able to provide for the children’s resource needs. When resources are scarce, students disengage and eventually drop out.
3) Technology is a far-fetched dream
The world is tech-driven, but many Indian schools still use outdated methods. No computers and no internet lead to students missing out on opportunities. Having access to technology equips them to enter the real world, ready with the same skills any other child would have.

4) Extracurricular activities are overlooked
Schools aren’t simply meant for academic learning; they also shape children into whole individuals. Extracurricular activities play a crucial role when trying to make school a more well-rounded experience. The goal is to make them learn without feeling like a burden, and unfortunately, an absence of these activities can make a child uninterested.
5) Lack of parental awareness
Sometimes, a lack of awareness among parents can cost their children a better and safer future. Due to poor financial conditions, parents choose for their children to support the family instead of pursuing an education. This is an unfortunate situation for many kids who can be helped with some parental awareness and educational support.
So, what can we do?
It's a complex issue, but a mindset shift is all it takes! Working together, government, businesses, and individuals can make a difference.
