5 reasons to become a STEM ambassador

I have been a STEM ambassador for 7 years, from the day I left University.
Why? I wanted to encourage girls into STEM subjects, as I found myself to be one of very few in a room throughout my educational years. Schools are always reaching out and asking for volunteers to help with there activities where they are going above and beyond to support their students,
Beyond this, here are 5 quick reasons why i recommend becoming a STEM ambassador...
?
Influence the younger generations
For me this is key, and for many, having a positive influence over those at school age, is always a plus. Working with schools to open the eyes of young individuals and excite them about subjects they have never thought about before such as tech or engineering, is so satisfying and makes me proud to work in STEM. If one child goes home that day considering tech as a potential interest, never mind future career, i am happy with the contribution i have made.
Meet like minded people (maybe learn something)
In all of the activities i have assisted with, careers fairs, career panels, running STEM days, STEM talks, practice interviews, the list goes on, I continue to meet individuals from other parts of the STEM family. Talking to them about their own passions and careers is a true positive of being an ambassador, and assist me in my own journey to continuously learn.

Get involved with a passion
Whatever your passion is within STEM, there is something for everyone. Whether that is sustainability, robotics, science, maths, tech, engineering... There is always an event going on that is asking for volunteers related to any passion you have within STEM.

Use your volunteer days
Most companies nowadays allow employees to take volunteer days / hours to contribute to something they care about. A lot of events are held in school time and so why not utilise the days avaialble to you. Most companies will welcome the extra exposure in the local areas and are always looking to positively contribute to society.
Fun
If you're a nerd like me, you'll find most STEM days to be fun. Whether you are coding with 9 year olds, holding careers days with 15 year olds or building volcanoes with 5 year olds, you can always guarantee the day will be full of fun and laughter.?
