5 quick ways.....
Often when I coach clients I am told "I know" and while that is super amazing self awareness (congratulations) there is a massive difference between "knowing" and "taking action" Let me explain....
Take the example of weight loss. I might know that I am tipping the scales in the wrong direction but what is going to make me take action? I hear and see it all the time (and quite frankly do it myself sometimes) As I bite into the delicious mud cake, the conversation goes around the table "I really must lose weight but I will start tomorrow" Ummm... the pain is just not painful enough......yet!
And the example of the smoker - we all know that smoking is very bad for your health yet there are a long line of people outside offices and restaurants smoking. We have banished people from public places, made the purchase of buying cigarettes very expensive and shocked everyone with advertising about the health hazards yet people are still smoking.
Here are a few of Tim Ferriss quotes (from The 4 hour work week)
"People will choose unhappiness over uncertainty"
"What we fear doing most is usually what we most need to do"
It can become a bit of a spiral....
First I say "I know" as I see the problem but for most people the pain needs to be really painful before a change is considered....then "considering" can take another whole life of it's own. After that (when it's super painful) it's "action time" to make the change.....Then we can spend days, weeks, months "beating ourselves up" over "if only I took action sooner" This just makes the process more painful, and that makes the change less likely to happen and us feeling even more pain.....
We often get so tied up in all of this stuff....we forget that we have a choice and... to actually take care of ourselves.
Start with setting yourself up for success rather than failure....If you want to make a change (whatever that is) then start with small changes that are easy to accomplish and will set you up with success. Then build on it from there over time - habits take 12 weeks to embed.
Not sure where to start or what to do ?
Here are 5 quick ways (new habits) that will allow you to be your best version. (Start with one as the point here is to embed success not ticking boxes)
1. Set a short term goal and do it - 5 minutes
Might be kicking the footy with your son, taking the dog for a walk or even drinking an extra glass of water a day. Set a short-term goal and "just do it" for one week every day. Then congratulate yourself daily for accomplishing it.
2. Write to someone who is your hero/mentor – takes 5 minutes
We all of these people: our heroes that we look up to. If you want to show more gratitude in life (which is important to being happy) this is a great addition to your day!
Whether they wrote a great book or said something that really inspired you, show them your gratitude. Invest that 5 minutes and show your gratitude. They will highly appreciate it and it will also boost them to put out more valuable content for you to become better in life.
2. Meditate – takes 10 minutes
It’s easy to get extremely stressed in life. If you feel like that often, this is a really good one for you.
3. Make a plan for the next day – takes 3-5 minutes
Most people won’t do this, yet this is a life-changer! If you’re struggling with getting things done, I can highly recommend doing this. It "tips" out the things that you need to do and gives you "brain space" At the end of your work day write down the tasks and activities you want to do the next day and schedule them. This will ease your mind when you wake up the next morning since you already know what you are going to do and when you’re going to do it.
4. Watch commencement speeches by successful people – takes 10 minutes
If you struggle with getting inspired, this one is for you.
5. Take 6 deep breaths – takes 1 minute
Do you ever experience anger, anxiety, stress or other emotions that we consider negative? Then I can highly suggest doing this a few times a day.
See, it takes less than a minute and will make you feel a lot better. Just close your eyes or stare at some point in the distance. Slowly breathe in, count 1, and slowly breathe out, count 1 again. Then, breathe in again, count 2, and slowly breathe out again. All the way up to 6. Often when you feel bad, people tell you to take a deep breath......when you take more (like 6) you feel better !

6 年Great article, Sandy Colombo ??And great tips - taking those deep breaths surely does help. If instead of thinking of 10 excuses for not taking action, we just took one small step, we can start tackling the problem.??
