5 Quick Ways to Boost Employee Engagement Today

Employee engagement is the cornerstone of a thriving and sustainable workplace. When employees are engaged, they’re more productive, creative, and committed to achieving organizational goals (in other words, they LIKE being at work). In The my Employee Engagement Guidebook 2025, I explore strategies to build long-lasting engagement. Sometimes, you need quick wins to see immediate results.

Try one or more of these five things today to boost engagement in your organization:

1. Celebrate Small Wins

Recognizing small achievements is a powerful motivator. Acknowledge contributions in real-time—whether it’s a shout-out in a morning huddle, a handwritten note, or a quick email. When employees feel seen and appreciated, their connection to their work grows.

Action Tip: Start your next huddle with a round of “success stories” where everyone shares a recent accomplishment. Don't forget to celebrate with a round of High 5s!

2. Ask for Input—and Act on It

Employees want to feel that their voices matter. Regularly solicit their feedback and, most importantly, take visible action on their suggestions. Even small changes show you’re listening and invested in their well-being.

Action Tip: Send out a quick poll or survey today with one or two questions about a process or challenge and commit to incorporating your teams' ideas.

3. Empower Decision-Making

Engagement thrives when employees feel trusted to make decisions. Empower your team to solve problems within their roles without always seeking approval, especially in customer-facing positions. This is particularly important for team members who work evening and overnight shifts when management may not be on site.

Action Tip: Identify one decision employees can make without managerial input starting today, and communicate your trust in their abilities. Don't forget to follow up with kudos and coaching as your team becomes more confident making decisions on their own.

4. Provide a Development Opportunity

Many employees want to grow in their roles. Offering even small-scale development opportunities can spark excitement and engagement. This could be a quick skill-building workshop, a new project, or cross-training in another department.

Action Tip: Ask one team member today what skill they’d like to learn and create a mini-plan to help them get started. Don't forget to commit to a start date!

5. Connect Purpose to Daily Work

Engagement often falters when employees lose sight of why their work matters. Help them see the bigger picture by regularly connecting their tasks to your organization’s mission or goals.

Action Tip: In your next one-on-one or team meeting, share a story of how their work has positively impacted a customer, the community, or the company. It can be especially impactful when you share a story of how their work as impacted you.

Final Thoughts

These five ideas are just the beginning. Sustaining engagement requires ongoing effort, clear communication, and a culture that prioritizes people. But by implementing even one of these strategies today, you’ll take a meaningful step toward creating a sustainable workplace where employees feel valued, energized, and empowered.
