A common challenge for managers in global companies who want to improve their English communication skills for their careers: How do I create a system for my learning?
With the overwhelming amount of information out there, it can indeed feel daunting to even begin. Nonetheless, by breaking things down, it is possible to create a system that can help you improve your English communication skills in order to communicate more effectively with your clients and colleagues.
Systems make things more efficient, including our learning. This, in turn, helps us to communicate more clearly and confidently with our global colleagues and clients at a quicker rate.
How can you create your own language communication skills system to improve your language communication skills at a faster rate? Here are five key steps you need to implement immediately:
- Define your goals:?Fully understand your "why" – Why do I want to improve my communication skills in this language? What specific situations do I need to use them in? What specific areas do I need to improve in? Be crystal clear here. Having your goals clearly defined will give you both direction and the motivation to keep learning through all the ups and downs of this learning journey. A few examples of goals could be: to improve work performance and opportunities, to travel, to make friends in a new culture, etc. A few examples of weak, shallow goals that you should NOT have: to sound cool, because everyone else is learning, or because someone else wants you to learn the language. If your goals are not deeply rooted within yourself, this is the quickest way to lose motivation, confidence, and ultimately, to give up.
- Get?started ASAP:?Once you clarify your goals and know your “why”, get started! There will never be a “perfect” time to get started. Just get started! Like learning to drive a car, you won’t learn or know how to drive until you get started, even if you’re not that good at it. This is where most fail: not starting. By getting started, you already have won a huge part of the battle: mindset! You can always improve and adjust your learning and methods as you go, and improve in the meantime! Getting started can feel intimidating, but once you get started, you can be confident you have taken a big step in the right direction to achieve your goals!
- Practice daily:?Be consistent and practice daily. In order to learn how to communicate in another language, we need to first interact with it daily. Daily interaction with it helps us build our “feel” of the language and will help improve listening and speaking skills. Additionally, being consistent is crucial. On some days you may feel super motivated, other days you may feel exhausted and not want to do anything. The key is to make your study and practice a daily, enjoyable habit. The more of a regular habit it becomes, like eating breakfast or brushing our teeth, the less energy we will spend thinking about it. In turn, this will make it easier to stick to and is essential to getting real results. Don’t skip days!
- Find resources related to your goals:?Find resources that you can use daily that help you to interact with the language – videos, podcasts, articles, etc. Ensure the content is relevant to your specific goals, this will help make your learning more efficient.?For example, if you are a manager in a global company that needs to lead meeting discussions about scientific topics or marketing, find content related directly to science or marketing, not travel or eating out. Targeting our learning helps us to interact with and learn more target vocabulary and situations. Not only will this help you learn authentic and important words and phrases more quickly, but this will also build your confidence to understand and interact in these types of situations. Target your learning to make it more efficient.
- Principles over methods:?While one method may work for one person, it may not for another. However, principles are the same, so aim to understand the underlying principles in order to better grasp how to improve. For example, 15 minutes of practice in the morning and 15 minutes at night versus 30 minutes at once are two different methods. Both different methods apply the same principle though: Daily practice. By understanding the underlying principles, you will always know how to handle different types of situations and adjust your learning accordingly.
Remember, systems make things more efficient. Thus, by learning in a systemized way, you increase both the efficiency and quality of your learning. Doing this is going to give you meaningful results and ultimately communicate more effectively with your global colleagues and clients.
