5 Questions with...Malcolm Shore

Each week I’m going to highlight a LinkedIn Learning instructor by posting their responses to five questions. Today’s feature spotlights Malcolm Shore, instructor for many of our foundational cybersecurity courses including Cybersecurity Foundations.?

Malcolm Shore is a cybersecurity expert who spent ten years as a director at New Zealand's GCSB. Malcolm was the principal security officer at the Australian National Broadband Network Company and the director of education and community relations for the Australian Information Security Association. He's currently a technical director at BAE Systems Applied Intelligence, and an educator in the fields of forensics, information warfare, security management, and applied cryptography. He holds a PhD in information security.

Let’s learn more about Malcolm!

1. Tell me something about yourself that’s not on your LinkedIn profile.

I play cornet in a brass band with my two daughters, Emma who also plays cornet and Elizabeth our percussionist.

2. What does a “day-in-the-life” look like for you?

Breakfast with the family, wave the girls off to school, sit down to check emails and other incoming messages.? Start work on courseware. Some outside time in the orchard keeping the tree in trim and getting fresh air and sunshine (or rain). ? Perhaps some time investing in watching a new training course or an upgrade to my data centre, or building a new server to support a course topic. Once or twice a week chatting with a PhD student I am supervising to see how she is progressing with her thesis.? Dinner with the family, shuffling girls to their various afternoon/evening activities, and music practice with Emma.

3. When you think about the next year, what’s top of mind for you with respect to the cybersecurity landscape?

Needing to improve our training to help develop? better defensive security professionals, and thinking of how to make some of the new concepts in cybersecurity into practical realities. How do we implement zero trust effectively? How do we detect malicious implants?? How is all of this going to evolve into a metaverse and what does that mean for us? Will we ever see real cyber diplomacy ?

4. What skills, technical or otherwise, are most important for success in cybersecurity???

Having a wide background in computing and networks, and the ability to continually learn about new technology concepts.?

5. Cybersecurity is constantly changing. What are some ways that you’ve found to stay on top of the latest developments and advance your own skills??

Watching the various tech news feeds and continuing to take courses and read reviews on emerging concepts. Trying out new software products to get hands-on. Especially, in my field, picking up the latest vulnerabilities and building the proof of concept tools to understand the environment they run in and how to run them.? Contributing to international standards groups helps keep up to date while being a contribution back to the industry.
