Q: What does equal representation look like in the beauty industry, and where do you think there is room for improvement??
O: Equal representation in the beauty industry means ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or skin colour, are authentically and inclusively represented in various aspects of the industry. This encompasses representation in marketing campaigns, product development, professional opportunities, and broader conversations around beauty standards. It is essential to recognize and address the unique needs and challenges that individuals with darker skin tones may face.
When it comes to equal representation in Nigeria, there is certainly room for improvement, particularly in fostering acceptance and inclusivity for individuals with skin concerns such as vitiligo, advanced acne, and acne scars. These conditions can have a significant impact on a person's self-esteem and overall well-being, and it is crucial that society embraces diversity and supports individuals facing these challenges.

Q: What changes would you like to see in the Nigerian beauty industry?
O: In the Nigerian beauty, medical aesthetics, and skincare industry, there are several changes that I believe would be beneficial for its growth and development. These changes primarily revolve around access to education, government regulation, access to medical-grade treatment products, and mortgage facilities.
Here are some specific areas where improvements are needed:
1. Access to Education: The industry would greatly benefit from enhanced educational opportunities for professionals in skincare, medical aesthetics, and beauty. This includes providing comprehensive and specialised training programs, workshops, and certifications to ensure that practitioners have the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver safe and effective treatments. Investing in education will elevate the overall standard of care in the industry and empower professionals to provide top-quality services to their clients.
2. Government Regulation: The implementation of clear and comprehensive regulations by the government is crucial for the industry's growth. This includes licensing requirements, guidelines for safe practices, and the establishment of regulatory bodies to oversee and monitor the industry. Adequate regulation would help protect consumers, ensure ethical practices, and foster an environment of trust and accountability within the beauty and medical aesthetics sectors.
3. Access to Medical-Grade Treatment Products: Availability and accessibility of high-quality medical-grade treatment products are essential for professionals in the industry. Ensuring that professionals have access to a wide range of effective and safe products would enhance the quality of services provided to clients. This can be achieved through partnerships with reputable suppliers, importation regulations, and initiatives that facilitate the availability of these products within Nigeria.
4. Mortgage Facilities: The establishment of mortgage facilities specifically tailored to the beauty, medical aesthetics, and skincare industry would support professionals in setting up and expanding their businesses. Access to affordable financing options can help practitioners acquire state-of-the-art equipment, upgrade their facilities, and invest in advanced training. This would contribute to the overall growth and development of the industry, allowing professionals to offer a wider range of services and meet the increasing demands of clients.
5. Collaboration and Networking Opportunities: Encouraging collaboration and networking among professionals in the industry is vital for knowledge sharing, mentorship, and professional development. Creating platforms, events, and associations that facilitate these connections can help foster a sense of community and provide opportunities for continued growth and learning. These initiatives can also serve as avenues for collective advocacy, where industry professionals can work together to address common challenges and drive positive change.
By addressing these areas and implementing necessary changes, the Nigerian beauty, medical aesthetics, and skincare industry can experience significant growth and provide enhanced services to its consumers. These improvements would contribute to the industry's professionalism, quality of care, and reputation, ultimately benefiting both professionals and clients alike.
