5 Questions to Determine if it’s Time to Update Your Headshots

You probably already have professional headshots if you’re an entrepreneur or small business owner. You may even really love the ones you’re using now. That doesn’t mean they’re still working for you, however. How do you know when it’s time to update them??

That’s a question I get a lot, so I thought I’d make it easy for you to answer it. Here are five questions I ask my clients to help them decide whether it’s time to invest in new headshots:

QUESTION #1: HAVE YOU AGED?

If you’ve noticed some changes in the mirror, it’s probably a good idea to update your headshots. The reality is that your headshots need to look recent, so aging is the first good reason to consider updating your headshots. This is particularly important if someone finds and interacts with you online or through your website, where your headshot is featured and represents you. The person who shows up to do the job they’re hired for needs to look like the person in the photo who helped them get the job in the first place.

QUESTION #2: HAVE YOU UPDATED YOUR LOOK?

This question is somewhat related to question number one but can happen at any stage of life. Have you lost significant weight, changed your hair, or had surgery? This is another sign that scheduling another headshot session with your photographer is time. Again, when people meet with you, it can come off as untrustworthy if they don’t recognize you.

QUESTION #3: ARE PEOPLE OFTEN NOT RECOGNIZING YOU?

This question applies to anyone from any sector. If potential employers, clients, or business partners often tell you how different you look in person, you might want to update your headshots.

QUESTION #4: ARE YOUR CURRENT HEADSHOTS TOO TRENDY?

If the last time you took headshots, you followed a particular trend; whether this was a style of photo or fashion, it’s time to update your images. Unfortunately, trends never last long, which means your headshots quickly become outdated. It’s why I always work personally with my clients and have them work with a stylist prior to our photo shoot to ensure a timeless look and photo style that they can use regardless of what the trends do going forward.

QUESTION #5: HAS YOUR BRANDING CHANGED

If you’ve updated your brand in any way (from colors to getting a new logo) or even potentially updated your business offering or model, it’s definitely time to make sure your photos reflect your brand. As a brand photographer, this is one of my favorite things to work on with my clients. Before their shoot, we talk about which environment or location we should shoot in and what wardrobe colors and props will best represent their brand .

So, is it time to give your headshots an upgrade? If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, I’d love to be the one to help you get amazing, current photos that you’ll be thrilled about using on your website and sharing on social media.
