1 - What is the history of their business?
Knowing who you will be doing business with is vital to a professional relationship. Take the time to determine their background and experience. Are you comfortable entrusting this contractor with working in your home?
2 - Do they have team members that can help with financing, design, or product selection?
Contractors can be a great resource in connecting you with reputable professionals. Mortgage brokers, architects, interior designers, and home product suppliers will be beneficial connections in ensuring you are happy with your renovation.
3 - How will the project be supervised?
Construction management can make or break schedules. Know who will be responsible for the day to day production of your renovation. For larger projects a printed schedule with stages of completion shows that the contractor can organize their time well.
4 - Which tradespeople do they work with?
It is important to ask which employees or trades will be completing the work and how long they have worked with the contractor. The longer the relationship generally the more consistent of an experience you can expect. If you have any doubts or concerns about a company or trades-person, ask to see their work or to talk with a previous client of theirs.
5 - How will your house and belongings be protected?
Renovations can be messy with tradespeople coming and going as well as the dust and debris from construction. What policies and procedures will be implemented to ensure your house is left clean and any personal belongings are not damaged? Will you be required to move furniture, appliances, personal effects etc. before renovations can start?
