5 Questions to Ask After Providing Feedback

The key to feedback is to give it so someone receives it openly and professionally and puts it into strategic use. One of the best things that you can do is to ask questions after providing feedback. For the sake of this article, we'll assume the feedback is constructive in nature. And here are five questions you could ask to create greater ownership of feedback.

  1. Hearing that feedback, what are you gonna do to positively embrace it?
  2. What are you going to do going forward after hearing the feedback to put steps it into action professionally and thoughtfully?
  3. What are you going to do to embrace that feedback and what could I do to assist you in the process?
  4. Knowing that feedback comes from a good place what are you going to do to look in the mirror and to successfully embrace the feedback to ultimately put into action steps positively and what could we do together?
  5. What are two things you're going to do right now, going forward not only to embrace that feedback, yet to also put into action the steps required to correct things?

Again, the goal of feedback is never simply to give it yet it's to give it so someone receives it well and professionally accepts it after receiving feedback. Ask questions of clarification and action, meaning you get them to clarify how they embrace the feedback, as well as what they're going to put into action. It's a positive thing to do; whereas, most people will simply provide feedback and leave the feedback as it is. Sometimes people will walk away nodding, yet what they're really saying in their mind is they're not agreeing, so they may never embrace the feedback or put anything into action positively. The questions help frame their mind positively and to take action.
