Landing an interview can sometimes feel like you're navigating a maze—especially when you're up against hundreds of other candidates vying for the same role.
It’s no longer just about having the right qualifications.
These days, it's about how you present yourself—strategically, authentically, and with the right touch of personalization.
That’s exactly what happened when a client reached out to us to recruit a digital marketer.
We received hundreds of applications, but only a few candidates were invited for an interview.
Why?
Most of the applicants could not present themselves well enough to get the interview invite.
And in today's newsletter, I will be sharing five proven strategies that can give you that crucial edge and help you secure the interview invite you’ve been waiting for:
1. Have a Tailored CV:
Most jobseekers make the mistake of using the same CV for every job opportunity they apply to.
While this may save time, but it does you more harm than good.
Each job is unique, and so should be your approach to applying.
Take the time to align your experience, skills, and qualifications with the specific requirements of the job you’re targeting.
Consider the keywords used in the job description—these are golden clues.
Incorporate them into your CV to show you’re an ideal candidate.
Sometime ago, a client reached out to me, frustrated by the lack of interview invites despite having a strong and comprehensive CV.
However, I realized it was too generic after I reviewed it.
This generic CV didn’t emphasize her fit for the digital marketing role.
After we revamped it to focus on her strengths relevant to each position, the invites started rolling in.
2. Craft a Compelling Cover Letter:
Your cover letter is your chance to speak directly to the hiring manager.
Think of it as your elevator pitch—your opportunity to tell them why you’re a great fit for their company.
Don’t just rewrite your CV.
Instead, use the space to highlight how your unique skills and experience can solve their problems.
Share your story by showing them how passionate you are for the industry, and most importantly, explain why you’re excited about that specific role.
Make it personal, make it real.
3. Leverage Your Network:
In today’s world, who you know is as important as what you know.
Your network—both online and offline—can significantly increase your chances of getting noticed.
Engage with professionals in your industry on LinkedIn, attend virtual or in-person events, and build relationships.

Networking opens doors that a cold application might not.
If you’ve established valuable relationships, don’t hesitate to ask for referrals or introductions.
A well-placed recommendation can fast-track your application straight to the hiring manager’s desk.
4. Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile:
Your LinkedIn profile is more than just an online resume—it’s your personal brand.
Many employers now look out for applicants on LinkedIn before making hiring decisions, so make sure your profile is polished, complete, and keyword-optimized.
Ensure it showcases your accomplishments and career achievements.
Also, a professional photo, strong headline, and sharing of insights and contents helps to show your expertise in your field.
It shows that you’re active and engaged in your industry.
Your LinkedIn profile should reflect both professionalism and personality.
Use it as a platform to establish yourself as a thought leader in your field.
5. Follow-Up on Your Application:
Many candidates hesitate to follow up after submitting an application, worried they’ll seem pushy.
However, a well-timed, polite follow-up can be the extra nudge a hiring manager needs to remember your application.
It shows initiative, enthusiasm, and genuine interest in the role.
Bonus tip: Be sure to give a week or two week's gap after submitting your application before reaching out.
When you do follow up, keep it brief and professional.
Express your continued interest in the position and reiterate why you’re excited about the opportunity.
It can help ensure your application doesn’t get lost in the pile.
