5 profiles and behaviors that cause us self sabotage and damage our teams

In our daily routines in the office, there are many patterns and profiles we can identify, some people may choose to live healthy and safe lives there, while others... may not do this (sometimes, or mostly, not because they want, but because some internal or external issues may lead them to it), one day or another we'll meet them or, if not carefully caring about ourselves, we can easily become this person. So let's list here some of those, but first of all, remind it, no matter how I'm gonna present them here, it's no joke, it serious, sad and sometimes hard to face/deal with this issues when they come.

The Workaholic one - the Yes-Sir-man/woman

  • Deeply addicted to it's job, this one doesn't know when or how to stop, it will always be abnormally ready to accept ANY task, from the beginning to the end of the day, they will easily face many difficulty to separate a time to relax and have some fun with their friends and family. Unfortunatelly, this profile usually suffers from anxiety, some may have it as a escape pod from the reality of their own personal struggles, but once it is an addiction, they are getting blind and unconsiously they are also getting worst and can gradually develop many illness. Try learn more on when and how to say No, for to say some No, sometimes is so liberating.

The business/tech vocabulary addicted - the business dude

  • A person that just can't stop speaking not only in formal, but mainly in technical manners in and outside of the office? The one that just don't know how to properly separate friendly and social from professional conversations, he or she just do not disconnect from their "business dude" mode when out of the office. This usually cause some struggles between the person and friends, family or relatives not used to his/her "awesome vocabulary", still they also don't notice that they are not understanding and they are not their clients or team mate. If this behavior is not identified and properly treated in time, they will be faced as arrogants (conscious or not about it) and may easily loose some precious friendships and their precious "networking" will be as short and weak as their current communication skills. Get free, be yourself, there's a world out of the office.

Past is my love - The ones that hold past tight fearing change and innovations

  • The fear of the unknown, the fear of the change and the fear of being replaced make many people get bound to their past and current experiences, some may try to raise, get adapted and/or find a way out to solve it, some will unfortunatelly get lost and sucucmb toa asens of failure, but some, with selfish biddings, once watching their comfort zone threatened or tearring a apart, not up to adapt themselves to new cultures, technologies and procedures, they strongly and reluctantly resist getting tied to the most common excuses (like "why to change, when it always worked this way?") known, all to fortify their point of view, which is actually a sand castle close face its demise by the first wave coming to it, the unstoppable change arriving. Present is here, embrace it, take only good memories and lessons learned from past, live today to assure your future.

I did my job, it's not my fault

  • The mindset of teamwork have been changing through the last years as well as the sense of leadership and responsibility, with the growth of cross-skilled/functional, self-organized teams and agile metodologies (that brought most of them) in many organizations, considering it, this reckless and selfish point of view that keeps fingering faulty members and jumping off of resposnibility, will not long last in collaborative teams with sense of self-awareness, as this mislead and more traditional mindset may is reaching its last days of "effectivity". For sure, we know that there will always be here and there those in a team in need of help (askinfg for it or not), those who procrastinate and those who... just have their names but did or do nothing in the project (this most commonly happens in more academic backgrounds, once it does not work or last long without proper penalties out there). A self-organized team aware of their responsibilities will hardly face this kind of issue once they will always know/identify the needs of each other and helps themselves in time. Be an active part of your team and help each other whenever needed.

It's too early, I can do it later - procrastination and the death stare of the due date / deadline

  • Oh procrastination... maybe it's the most mocked issue known, whom never actually did it somehow? It may sounds funny, but is self-cheating, in a nutshell, it's the blind act when you underestimate too much the deadlines and the job related to it, allow yourself to get distracted with many things, then, so "suddenly", you'll find yourself in the last days or hours close to deliver it, there you face that "horrifying" dilemma: "Oh it passed so fast, how can I do it now? Should I say the truth? What excuses may save me now?". Yeah, such behavior, just like any other mentioned here, in the end, will strike back inflicting some damage (in many possible ways) to anyone who does it so. Wake up, watch out, better early with quality and commitment, then late and poorly made (or not even done / delivered).

Obviosuly there are many other striking issues than those mentioned above...

But, in the end, how to solve them? How to avoid taking that course? What if we witness it happening with someone nearby?

Well then, the answer or the so acclaimed solution, as always, is not as easy as it sounds, when talking about treating existing issues, bad behaviors taking action over it and solve it properly as harmless as possible. If and ONLY IF identified at their first signs of activity, it is possible to address such harmful behaviors and then avoid future problems. Now, about the ones nearby, our team mates, it is expected and sounds more correct, as long as it is possible and the person is open for and allows it (to be helped), to help them out somehow warning to avoid that dangerous path, but if there's no openness for it and he or she keeps on persisting on it, then there's no much thing to do but to stop and apply proper actions or wait from superiors to do it. (Yet, honestly, if you are a religious one and REALLY really cares about that person found in this uneasy scenario, don't you dare retain your faith and hope, and pray for him/her, maybe you can witness a good ending for them.)

Excellent text, as usual, but, what can we do when we see things happening on our faces and we're just trainees??
