The 5 I’s of Productivity: A New Way to Work, Lead, and Live

Productivity isn’t just about getting more done—it’s about creating meaningful impact. Over the past few months, Angela Scott and I have been exploring the shifting nature of productivity and how it’s evolving beyond efficiency to something deeper: a way to align work, life, and personal ambition in a way that feels intentional, energizing, and fulfilling.

Through this journey, we’ve landed on what we call The 5 I’s of Productivity—a framework that captures how we can truly own our time, maximize our focus, and create lasting results.

1?? Investment – Productivity is about ROTI (Return on Time Investment).

Time is not something we spend—it’s something we invest. High-impact productivity means shifting from checking off tasks to prioritizing the things that matter most. It’s about designing our days around deep, meaningful work rather than reacting to distractions.

?? Ask yourself: Are you investing your time where it has the greatest return?

2?? Integration – Work and life are not separate, they are better aligned

The idea that we can only focus on one thing at a time no longer reflects reality. We are leaders, creators, partners, care-givers, thinkers—sometimes all at once. True productivity comes from stacking habits, blending roles, and designing workflows that support both professional success and personal fulfillment.

?? Ask yourself: How can you build a system that allows you embrace all the dimensions of yourself?

3?? Intention – Productivity is a conscious choice.

Busyness isn’t progress. The most successful people don’t just work hard—they work with purpose. Intention is about getting clear on your why and ensuring that every action aligns with the impact you want to create. Without it, you risk movement without meaning.

?? Ask yourself: Are your daily habits taking you closer to your long-term vision, or are you just running on autopilot?

4?? Inspiration – Flow isn’t luck, it’s strategy.

Flow—the state where productivity and creativity merge—isn’t something we stumble upon. It’s something we engineer. Research from Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and Maria Krajewska-Olkkonen shows that flow happens when challenge meets skill in the right conditions. It’s built on discipline, structure, and self-awareness.

?? Ask yourself: What habits, spaces, and triggers help you enter your most productive and creative state?

5?? Impact – The real measure of productivity is results, not effort.

At the end of the day, what matters isn’t how many hours we work, but what we create, change, and improve. The best productivity system isn’t the one that helps you do the most—it’s the one that helps you make the biggest difference.

?? Ask yourself: How do you measure success? Are you optimizing for impact, or just output?

Whether you lead a team, run a business, or are designing your ideal work-life structure, the 5 I’s provide a framework to invest in what matters, integrate work and life, act with intention, unlock inspiration, and drive real impact.

Which of these I’s resonates with you the most right now? Let’s continue the conversation—how are you reshaping productivity in your world?

I’m glad we had so many discussions around this. It’s been fascinating to deconstruct productivity beyond the usual surface-level take on it. What I love most is how each of these 5 elements can be dialled up or down depending on what actually resonates with someone, making it a highly adaptable framework. Excited to see how we can help others apply this in their own way!
