Time is precious. Nobody gets more than 24 hours in a day. Yet there are some of us who complain about the lack of time, while there are many others who go on to achieve impossible feats, juggling multiple jobs, and still accomplishing their life goals. How? How are they doing it?
Learn how to manage your time effectively by being productive
Here are 5 tips to be productive and make a difference to your performance.
1. Set Clear Goals
Know what your short-term and long-term goals are. Learn to to differentiate between what’s important and what’s not. For example, a short term goal could be that you want to finish your studies at least a month before your exams. Your long term goal could be cracking the SAT test with a perfect score. Make sure you’re engaging in activities that support your business or personal goals. Everything else is a potential time-waste activity.
“A common bad habit people have is that they get into the workday without a clear idea about what needs to get done.”
2. Prioritize.
Do you prioritize your tasks before getting on with them? It’s important to list the tasks you have and to sort these in order of priority, and then to devote most time to the most important tasks. Differentiate also between urgent and important tasks: an urgent task may not necessarily be important. Know the difference between ‘Important’ and ‘Urgent’. For instance, sending a quick reply to your boss may be ‘urgent’ but choosing the right career path is ‘important.’ If you train your eyes on the important and the urgent, you will be able to tackle most of your problems on time.
3. Avoid Procrastination and Distraction.
This one is hard because most people are guilty of either procrastination or distraction. Distractions are everywhere. Whether it’s Facebook, gaming, or chatting with friends, we have enough bad habits that take away the precious little time. The only way to break a habit of procrastination is to consistently act in other ways – so stop putting things off and just do it.
4. Keep a Time Log
It’s useful to track your daily activities and how much time each takes. Having a calendar is the most fundamental step to managing your daily activities. Mark the deadlines out clearly in your calendar and organizer so you know when you need to finish them. Time management is a skill that will take you a long way in your work and study life.
5. Plan Ahead.
A common bad habit people have is that they get into the workday without a clear idea about what needs to get done. If you spend your time thinking ahead and planning your activities, you will save the traumatic and annoying need to move from task to task without achieving anything. Plan your day before it unfolds. Do it in the morning or even better, the night before you sleep. It’s also important to remember that things often take longer than expected. So, allow a little extra time in case you spend longer on a task than you thought you would.
Use these 5 and productivity boosting and time management tips, and keep improving your deadlines. It won’t be long, when you will have enough time in the day to manage all your activities without feeling the pressure of deadlines and inefficiency.
