5 Practical applications for Demand Sensing – as of June 2019

1.      Connected Cars – Toyota’s new line up vehicles rumoured in 2020 will feature a ‘Connective Assist technology’ i.e. will be connected to the internet via 4G. Cars will be able to advise service technicians in advance, what parts need to be ordered for the next scheduled service and also provide Realtime ‘fuel’ data for Major Oil companies. Toyota has partnered with Caltex to provide Fuel Discounts already in Australia.

2.      Replenishment Sensing at a shelf space level, with new equipment as seen in hotel minibars already, can alert a potential supermarket of a sudden surge in demand at a local store level. Intraday replenishments will be possible with scalable systems such as SAP HANA.

3.      Traffic and Motorway data – Big Data from Google Maps can already be used at an aggregate level to assess the peaks and troughs of commuters on state motorways. Traffic lights can be further timed to optimise the flow and reduce congestion.

4.      Historical Weather and Seismic data can be used at a certain confidence level to assess the future potential occurrence of a hailstorm, or minor Earthquake in the building insurance and construction sectors.

5.      Weather Stations – Humidity levels and temperature control stations will further assist the Bureau of Meteorology and local Fire service with potential hazard reduction areas and co-ordinate resources in the event of a disaster.
