The last grand slam event of the year is about to start and there is no reason why one should not put his money on a winner apart from Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. (Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray will miss the tournament because of injuries).
We cannot compare the records of these two players with that of the other players as they are legends of the game. But if we compare some of the other players performances against them recently, then they are right up there,
We take a look at 5 such players who might serve a few surprises this US Open.
1)Alexander Zverev (Germany):-Fresh from his dominating performance against Roger Federer in the Canadian Open final where he overcame the Swiss maestro by a 6-3 , 6-4 scoreline, Zverev was always considered an emerging star in Tennis circles. The German prodigy could produce a sparkling performance and might upset a top seeded player through his power packed back hand strokes, while his base lines are equally innovative.
His powerful serves and ground strokes can surprise the opposition. His spirited show in the Rome Masters finals in may which he won against Djokovic was quite fascinating .He also finished as runner up in the Halle Open in June against Roger Federer.
Alexander Zverev
2)Dominic Theim (Austria):-Like Alexander Zverev the 24 year old Austrian is also touted as the next big thing in the Tennis Circuit. Theim has been in decent form this year as he finished runner up in the Madrid Open in May this year losing to eventual winner Rafael Nadal 7-6, 6-4 in the final.
He also produced some eye catching performances in the French Open in May even though he lost the semifinals against Rafael Nadal. He has this unique ability to come back strongly even from a losing position. His ground strokes and back hand strokes look quite precise combined with his deceptive topspin shots. His baseline strokes are immaculate.
Dominic Thiem (Austria)
3)Grigor Dimitrov (Bulgaria):- Though he had a disappointing Canadian Open as his campaign ended with a loss against Robin Haase of France in the the round of 16, the win in the final of Cincinnati Open played on August 21 against Nick Kyrgios with a 6-3, 7-5 scoreline would certainly have lifted the Bulgarian's confidence, as the 27 looked in great touch. Dimitrov is known for his deceptive drop shots, solid ground strokes and his conventional backhands. His lightning fast serves can surprise the opponents.

4)Nick Kyrgios (Australia):-Nick Kyrgios has always been in the news for his attitude both on field as well as off the field for his constant run-ins with match officials or with his opponents, but when it comes to his playing style many have billed him a supremely gifted player with a wide range of shots under his sleeves. Many have stated his rush of temper as the reason he is not reaching the heights he is expected to.
His pounding backhand shots and solid forehand combined with his rushing serves can ground any opponent. Though he lost the finals of the just concluded Cincinnati Open against Dimitrov he showed a lot of promise in that game.

5)Marion Cilic (Croatia):-Although the Croatian fell apart in the final of Wimbledon last month against Roger Federer because of an injury, the 28 year old looks in decent shape after rehabilitation.
Cilic with his accurate ground strokes can shut out any opponent. His exemplary baselines combined with his devastating serves are quite potent. His stunning returns during the run of play can outclass any opponent.
