#5 OVERTIME - a song about the corporate jungle, hard work and purpose

Welcome to Edition #5 of my newsletter where I introduce the songs from my album "WORK LIFE BALANCE " one by one with some context and behind-the-scenes information.

WHY I WROTE IT

Let's face it - I couldn't call my album "WORK LIFE BALANCE" without addressing the topic of overtime, could I?

Well, back in my expat times in China between 2012-2015 overtime was unfortunately very common, including a lot of late nights and weekend work! What can I say, working culture is just different across different countries.

However, I did meet my back then girlfriend and now wife and mother of my children there, so overtime became a little "sweeter" when I knew that I could be with her afterwards.

This song reflects exactly that feeling, and in many ways also the daily tasks I was facing in my job.

BEHIND THE MUSIC

• Although I did play piano in my high school jazz big band for 3 years, I never actually wrote anything "jazzy" or "funky" up until this song - of course I used the classic blues chord progression to get it started!
• Adding the sound effects of an alarm clock or a backing vocal-like "oh no" was a lot of fun - and this song made sure that I would consider this for all my subsequent creations
• The piano solo at 2:15 is one of my favorite solos of all time for me!

FUN FACTS

• When I worked in Beijing between 2012-2015 I didn't have any of my music recording equipment, so I was on a song production hiatus - this song was the first I wrote and recorded after I returns end of 2015
• I wrote the Chorus when I was a junior consultant - now I am a data leader and still spent most of my time with powerpoints, excel tables and emails. Some things never change, huh?!
