5 Networking Tips for Building Professional Relationships

5 Networking Tips for Building Professional Relationships

I have been getting a lot of questions regarding tips on building professional relationships, and how to properly network and expand your community.

Authentic Engagement

Genuine connections are built on authenticity. Find a commonality between you and the person you are trying to connect with. Instead of focusing solely on the exchange of LinkedIn connections, make it less transactional, engage in meaningful conversation and show interest in the other person’s work Feel free to also share insights and be open to share your own experiences. Often, authenticity lays the foundation for lasting professional relationships.?

I got a lot of connection requests, and after I accepted it they just purely asked for a referral, and sent me a relatively long elevator pitch. Often I would just let them know that I am not able to give them a referral or sometimes I would just ignore them because they feel too transactional and I am not into those connections. However, if someone reached out, wanted to set up a coffee chat and learn more about the company, and the work, and asked for a potential referral at the end of the chat, I would say yes to their referral request. This is because, it’s the effort of reaching out, and setting up a coffee chat with me that makes the difference.?

So reach out, set up a coffee chat, and when the time comes, ask!?

Follow-Up and Follow-Through

Networking doesn't end after the initial introduction. The key is to follow up. Follow-Up with them to start connecting, and nurture relationships. A lot of the time, it’s about the long-term relationship and not just a short-term or one-off coffee chat. Send a personalized email or message after meeting someone new. Remember to follow through on any promises or commitments you make during your interactions. Consistency and reliability are crucial for building trust and rapport.

I always send a thank you note at the end of a coffee chat to thank them for their time to chat with me and take out some time from their busy schedule to chat with me.?

This is the format of a thank you note I would use:

Dear <Recipient>,

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule and have this chat with me. I really appreciate you chatting with me about your experience, your work and the company. I would love to keep in contact in the future.?

<insert any follow-up/follow-through action items>

Again, thank you for your time and I will be sure to reach out in the future if I have further questions.

Thank You

<Your Name>

Provide Value

Networking is not just about what you can gain; it's also about what you can offer. Look for ways to provide value to your contacts, whether it's sharing relevant resources, making introductions, or offering assistance with their projects. By being a valuable resource, you'll strengthen your relationships and position yourself as someone worth knowing.?

As an example, if the person you are talking to has a side project or an organization on the side, ask them if they need any help with their organization, and in what area you can help with. Not only would they have an extra set of hands to help with their organisation, but it also gives you a chance to develop your personal and professional skills. If you find it hard to ask it while you are having the coffee chat, ask them as a follow-up email/notes.?

A lot of the time, I find it easier to put my words into written words than spoken words. I am not very good with my words when I am talking to people, but having time to brew my thoughts and translate them into written text is much easier.

Attend Industry Events

Take advantage of industry events, conferences, and networking mixers to expand your networking circle. These gatherings provide excellent opportunities to meet new people, learn about industry trends, and exchange ideas. A lot of the time, people who go to conferences have the opportunity to do on-site interviews and meet industry professionals.

Be proactive in approaching others, and don't be afraid to initiate conversations. People who goes to these events are usually very friendly, and open to chatting with other participants. Remember to follow up with the contacts you make after the event to stay connected with them, and keep in contact.?

Maintain a Strong Online Presence?

In today's digital age, maintaining a strong online presence is essential for networking. Keep a personal brand online can help people remembering you after meeting tons of people at a conference. Make sure that your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date and showcases your skills and experiences effectively. If you went to a conference or any meet-ups that you wanted to share with your network, don’t be afraid to make a post and post it on your feed. Be Bold! Make your first post!?

Engage with your network by sharing insightful articles, commenting on posts, and participating in relevant discussions. LinkedIn algorithms love it when you interact with other posts and articles. Like, Comment, Share and Repost! A strong online presence not only helps you stay visible but also facilitates connections with professionals in your field.

Hello Macy, I find the suggestions and advice that are presented within this post very meaningful. It really touches on some of the key point and the initial fear and barrier that prevents myself and others from reaching out to industry professionals. Especially when it comes to talking to industry professional, it feels like establishing an initial connection will always be perceived as leveraging personal connection for internships and opportunities rather than establishing meaningful ones. I think many university students can grow by starting to read this article. Would you mind if I help to repost this so more students can learn how to build on professional networking?
