The 5 Most Effective Food Resolutions to Start Now

There is a lot of conversation right now about food resolutions. But which ones actually make a difference, without feeling frustrated and deprived?

Eat all calories:

An oldie but a goodie – EAT your food, don’t drink it!

This is particularly true for fruits. While eating strawberries is GREAT for you, did you know a strawberry smoothie at my local juice place has over 50 grams of sugar?

That is more than 10 teaspoons of the sweet stuff!

It is also good to avoid fruit smoothies made at home. While the ingredients are probably fine, they tend to pack more calories, and be less filling, than simply eating the fruit instead.

Snack more:

Yes, it’s true! But only if the snack is healthy – like fresh veggies, fruits, or nuts. Having an afternoon snack can help ward off that feeling of “starving” at dinner, which often leads to overeating (and eating the wrong kinds of foods, like carbohydrates that increase your blood sugar quickly).

Select Dessert Carefully:

Dessert is an important part of life. Swearing it off completely hardly ever works! So instead, choose what matters most to you, and be deliberate about how often you eat it.

You might be able to forgo the candy but really want a scoop or two if great ice cream each week. Or you might just love a dish of apple crisp or a slice of pie once in a while.

You’ll find the more carefully you eat dessert, the more enjoyable the experience is!

Buy Bread from the Bakery:

While it might be feasible to find a high-quality bread from the grocery store, I find that the most healthy and delicious options are at my local bakery (who, luckily, comes to my Saturday farmer’s market!).

Buy dense, whole grain breads and whatever you don’t use right away, slice up and store in a plastic bag in the freezer. It is ready to toast up anytime!

Cook More!

A tried and true resolution.

The more you cook your own food, the healthier it will be. Enjoy the time in the kitchen (music or podcasts can help!) and enjoy the benefits of eating MUCH better food.
