Welcome to 5 Monday Bullets - my weekly recap with a focus on Self-Reliant Leadership?. Thank you for being here.
1. What I'm observing ?with regards to challenges, issues, problems and opportunities:
Loyalty...
My friend Tim Cole says that a leader's team has either compliant people, committed people, or loyal people. Well... I don't have to tell you that real loyalty might feel like a thing of the past. But... it could - and should - be better, and that starts with leaders truly understanding what motivates people at the macro level, and at the micro level.
Per Daniel Pink in DRIVE, we know that people need #autonomy, #purpose, and the ability to develop #mastery (learn & grow). What that looks like at the micro level is up to the leader taking the time to really understand what those three primary needs look like for each individual on their team.
And here's the kicker - what the leader needs back is seeing people going above and beyond for each other - and those they serve (typically, customers). So... here is what I propose: Players on sports teams have to make the roster every year. How about having people interview for their job each year by answering one single question:
How have you added real value to the organization over the last year?
If they don't have a quantifiable answer, then you have two choices. 1) Make it easier to follow you, or 2) Help them market their resume.
Companies have to get and keep customers or they go out of business. People in companies (leaders and followers) have to produce more value than they cost. They must produce an ROI for the firm - and they have to know how they do it (i.e., leader expectations and follow-up)
What do you think??
2. Most interesting article I read recently:
Parents Should Ignore Their Children More Often
Interesting read if you find yourself complaining about screen time for kids...
3. Quote of the week:
“In a safe environment you should share your context and perspective and hear how others perceive it differently. This is where vulnerability and authenticity are important.”

1 个月Great perspectives Jan Rutherford I believe adding vvalue to any organization or group always starts with looking at ourselves in the mirror and asking what we are doing to grow. If we don’t grow first as individuals, we likely can’t help our team grow

1 个月Excellent thoughts Jan. Loyalty - true loyalty - is rare but when you see it/feel it - transformational. I believe there are issues of character involved - and compassion and trust can’t always be taught - even in the most advanced executive program. They speak to the heart… Aristotle hit it 2300 plus years ago - logos, ethos, pathos. And the latter remains the most important of all - even in this era of advanced knowledge. I’m guessing he must have been fairly smart…
