5 Mistakes You Are Making That's Holding You Back From Maximizing Your Compensation Plan As a Sales Professional

So you're money-motivated and in sales because you heard it's a lucrative career, right? Are you maximizing your comp plan? Are you one of the top income-earners at your organization? If not, you may be making one of these five mistakes:

1. You don't know your compensation plan - Do you truly know the in's and out's of your compensation plan? Do you know what the accelerators and detractors are to it? More importantly, do you know what actions you must take to truly maximize each bucket for this? If you don't, here's an easy solve: take the time to review your comp plan carefully with a top earner or your sales leader. Strategize together to help you take full advantage of your plan to maximize your income!

2. You don't have a mentor - If you know your compensation plan inside and out, that is fantastic! The next step is to help you create massive awareness on the areas you may not be as focused on to help you take the next income level leap and one of the fastest ways is through a great mentor. Do you have a mentor that is where you want to be? Are they challenging how you think and helping you see different perspectives? Are they holding you accountable to your goals and helping you progress towards them?

3. You aren't focused on progressive mastery and training to become better - Are you a master of your craft and are you continuously working on becoming better? Top professionals are humble enough to know they are always working to become better at their craft. They are continuous self-educators to become better at every aspect of their craft and life to drive towards high performance. Poor performers simply learn to know. Top performers learn to execute. By becoming better daily, you will simply increase your value in the marketplace!

4. You are spending time on the wrong things - As sales professionals, we are VERY BUSY! We are also masters of self-deception and we find ourselves spinning our wheels on things that are not IPA's - Income Producing Activities! Have you ever had a day or week, in which you felt like you were incredibly busy but when you look back you are unclear what exactly you did that day? What are your IPA's? What are your 80/20 activities? What are the 20% of activities that drive 80% of your results? Once you uncover those and focus on that, your income will increase automatically!

5. You are at the wrong company - This is a pretty simple one - does your current company have a compensation package that is designed for you to make a lot of money? Or does it change 3-4 times/year? Is it set based on realistic goals or has no one every achieved the top tier? You can solve this by simply finding an established and great company. You can't make a great income if the system built around it does not support strong financial growth.
