You are an event management student, an events co-ordinator, blogger, volunteer and take part in many, many development events, where do you find the time Nyomi?
I am very happy that I am working in an industry that I love, so I feel like I don’t need to find time, I just want to do it! I am a huge advocate for time blocking and planning my week out which means I can make sure I fit everything I want to do in that week. I have been able to create an amazing network of like-minded individuals who share the same passion and enthusiasm as I do which has been amazing for my growth in the events industry and for myself.
Why is personal development important to you?
Personal development shifts your focus on to improving and enhancing yourself whereby you can make the steps to develop your individual growth. I love learning and developing myself everyday as there is always something new and exciting that I can learn. The joy of personal development is that it can never end and there is so many aspects of our lives we all want to improve, I usually focus on reading, improving my knowledge and skill set whilst trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Working in events is a constant job with not much time to focus on yourself as you are either busy planning an event, working onsite or travelling to the next event. So, it’s great for event professionals who are constantly on the go to take those steps to just focus on building themselves. On my Instagram blog page, I love sharing what new personal or professional developments I am doing every week to my followers. I am always inspired by others in the community who are learning new things or share their new discoveries on the platform.
#EventProf is a hashtag I see that you use in many of your social media posts. What does it mean?
The events industry is growing and expanding every day as more and more people fall in love with events, which I don’t blame them! However, I do feel that many people within the industry aren’t well informed and aware of the meticulous planning, hard work and expertise knowledge that goes into creating an unforgettable event.
As events are usually a mass gathering of lots of people event planners have a duty of care to their attendees so the planning of health and safety, crowd control (to name a few) is a huge part of ensuring an event is safely run. Therefore, there is a huge distinction between individuals just creating an event and an #eventprof who is a professional in the events industry.
As an #eventprof I feel it is essential to stay up-to-date within the industry as it is forever adapting and evolving, so I actively explore the latest trends and updates to make sure I create events that are not only a truly amazing experience but are safe for everyone.
Additionally, the hashtag unites the community across a variety of platforms to share their love in the industry through inspiration, trends, support and general event love. It is a super way of power searching to find event professionals who are active in the community and is a great way to network.
Event professionals have had to think fast and act quickly in order to stay relevant and adapt for the future.
There must have been a massive change in the event industry in light of COVID-19. Can you describe that impact and what the future is looking like?
The events industry has been affected severely by the pandemic and it has caused so much destruction in so many people’s lives, but I have been amazed by the power of the industry uniting and supporting one another during this crisis. Event professionals have had to think fast and act quickly in order to stay relevant and adapt for the future.
The events industry will never be the same again, but I strongly believe it will be for the better. So many people have started to think about how important those connections are with their loved ones and how significant the events industry is in creating those connections. I also believe there will be a huge change in sustainable thinking after everyone has seen those images of air pollution in the UK and how it has significantly decreased due to everyone being forced to stop what they are doing.
The live event experience has drastically changed as focus on health and safety measures will be key to the industry recovering. Therefore, it is important that the industry builds that trust and confidence with clients and the audience that attending an event will not put them at risk.
Hybrid events have become the hot topic in the events industry with the idea of creating that live experience but engaging those attendees virtually at the event. It is an interesting aspect of the events industry and we will see the rise in hybrid events more and more within the next two years. It will be interesting to see how event professionals can engage their audience live and virtually!
In your opinion, what is the most important part of an event?
I feel that when people attend an event, they remember those special moments, so I try and create those moments within events albeit virtually or live. It is so essential to understand your client and who your audience are. This makes sure that everyone who is a attending the event feels valued and welcomed.
The whole reason an event is created is for a multiple of reasons; to share knowledge, be inspired, learn something new and meet others, everyone has a different reason why they want to go to an event. With that being said, I like to create those added experiences at an event that give it a personality, like creating a personal guide to the event with fun activities and helpful advice or creating that immersive experiences that unites individuals together.
When you go to an event, you remember that time when you were standing in a queue to grab a coffee or that time when you sit next to someone in a seminar and get talking and you meet your future employer, partner or best friend. It can even be listening to a keynote that inspires you to kick start that business idea you have always had or to start living your life the way you want to.
How do you keep up with the latest tech in the industry?
Technology is crucial for the future of the events industry with there being so much digital noise, tech can quickly become outdated. New tech comes and goes so it is hard to keep track of everything but it is also important to understand why that tech did/didn’t work. It all helps with understanding your audiences and tech that may not have worked for that specific client it could work for another. So, staying engaged within the community is so important as you can develop an understanding on what tech is currently trending and what to start developing your knowledge base on.
I subscribe to a variety of different newsletters, followers and businesses as I find that is the most useful way to stay on top with technology.
I would like to create an event that empowers young people to think proactively about the future and be able to access the correct support networks that can help drive their personal and future success.
Who would be your dream client and/or event to organise?
I would love to be able to create an event that empowers and supports young people who are about to face the world. I feel that young people are represented poorly through the media with comments on the rise in obesity, being glued to social media, rise in anti-social behaviour and the list goes on.
Young people are shown the true colours of the world a lot faster and are therefore having to deal with the world in a completely different light than ever before. I would like to create an event that empowers young people to think proactively about the future and be able to access the correct support networks that can help drive their personal and future success.
I would like to create the event futuristically with everything being digital and eco-friendly. I would also like to support young people through the process of creating the event by hiring creative young people to be in the planning stages and hiring suppliers that have been founded by young people to further support and grow their future success.
You have a keen interest in sustainability and you are carbon literate qualified through the Carbon Literacy Project. What has driven you down this path and what are your hopes in this area?
Through the Carbon Literacy Project I have been able to gain an understanding on how our actions significantly impact our world. It was an amazing experience and one I will never forget as I learnt valuable skills and advice which I can now implement into my life. The project taught me how to tackle conversations surrounding climate change and how to drive that conversation in a positive and healthy way. A chance to share with our loved ones the knowledge and be there to support them in creating a more sustainable life which benefits the people and the planet.
Within my events management journey I hope I will be at the forefront of driving change in the industry and pave the way for other event professionals to think sustainably about events they are planning.
What’s next for Nyomi?
I am currently contemplating the idea of becoming a freelance event professional and providing my consultancy where I critique events and support companies to create an even better event for the future.
It would also be a great opportunity to share my knowledge in technology, sustainability and customer experience to make sure the future of events are always creating that unforgettable experience that is ethically conscious. I hope to continue my events career with AI Tech North and to be at the forefront of putting the north on the map for AI and tech innovations.
With regards to my blog I hope to keep on building relationships with other passionate individuals and to inspire the events industry during this difficult period. I am always seeking new opportunities to broaden my career prospects and I am always open to trying something new!
Where can we follow you?
I love to connect and meet other individuals in all walks of life, so I am always excited to network with others.
