So what exactly is this Post Production Tax Exemption (PPTE) thing that California has?
Well, simply put, it's a tax break for companies that are engaged in the business of post production in California- as they say "services for film, video, or digital multimedia formats (audio or visual) that include editing, film and video transfers, transcoding, dubbing, subtitling, credits, close captioning, audio production, special effects (visual or sound), graphics, or animation. For the purposes of this regulation, "teleproduction or other postproduction services" includes postproduction services and does not include production services or activities. "
So for us Post folks. We save money on State Sales Taxes. Sounds good. what is it that I need to do to get this? If post is your business, then you'll want to have your blanket exemption filled out and ready to send. A number of folks simply have their accounting departments send this as needed. I always preferred to have a filled out copy ready to send to whomever I was going to be purchasing from - or sending it to my Vendor ahead of time, so they have it on file.
So now the How- simply go here: https://www.cdtfa.ca.gov/lawguides/vol1/sutr/1532.html Have you or your accounting peeps Fill out the "blanket exemption" part of the form as it applies to your business. Then have it on file, or send it in to have it on file.
It's that simple. You save a chunk of change. So go visit that site today- All the details and the form are there.
